Commencement: Thanks and Congrats
Every year in May, Villanova holds a commencement to recognize the students who completed the requirements of their chosen degree. This year, VUHoops.com salutes those graduating seniors.
Academically, the Class of 2010 was one of the strongest in Villanova’s history. Applications increased drastically every year and acceptance rates declined to match. These graduates are some of the most-accomplished young men and women the University has ever enrolled and the ceiling on their future achievements is limitless. Read more

Welcome Back Reggie!

Reggie Set to Return
This week marks the end of the first semester of classes at Villanova. It also marks the end of Reggie Redding’s 10-Game suspension for possession of marijuana from this summer.
Redding faced a Delaware County judge today and was placed in Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition. The primary purpose of this program is “rehabilitation of the offender; secondarily, the purpose is the prompt disposition of charges, eliminating the need for costly and time-consuming trials or other court proceedings.”
The charge will be dropped from his record if he stays clean for year. Read more
One Charge Dropped for Redding
The Philadelphia Inquirer is reporting that one of the drug charges against Villanova guard Reggie Redding has been dropped by prosecutors. He was charged with both possession or distribution of small amounts of marijuana, as well as possession of drug paraphernalia. The misdemeanor of possession or distribution was the charge that was dropped.
Reggie will still have to answer to the paraphernalia charge. Read more
Wisdom of Crowds Recap – Part I: The Guards

Five weeks ago, inspired by the best selling book, The Wisdom of Crowds, we set out to test author James Surowiecki’s central thesis that by averaging the individual predictions of a group of independently thinking people, groups can make more accurate predictions than experts working alone. We conducted our test by polling the VUHoops readers, asking them to predict the minutes per game (MPG) of each player on Nova’s roster for next season. The polls are now closed, but we’ll have to wait until the season ends to assess whether there is, indeed, wisdom in the VUHoops crowd. Until then, we have some interesting scenarios to ponder, including what combinations of players will be on the floor to account for all those MPGs we predicted for each player.
We had to make a few computations to translate the readers’ votes into player MPGs. For you diehard statisticians, our methodology will be fully described in Part III of our recap, which will be posted next weekend. To the other more trusting readers, we offer the assurance that we validated our methodology with greyCat, editor of the outstanding and quantitatively-oriented blog, Villanova by the Numbers. In this installment, we review the MPG results for the guards; forwards & centers will be posted later this week. Read more
Wisdom of Crowds Experiment: Reggie Redding Revote

Redding & McAlarney Received Similar Disciplinary Action
Fittingly, final installment of our month-long series, Wisdom of Crowds Experiment, is a re-vote on Reggie Redding, as requested by VUHoops reader kmac. Our initial vote took place the day after news broke of Reggie’s arrest on marijuana possession charges.
Until that time, many VUHoops readers had been commenting that Reggie might get more minutes next season than any other player given his stellar defense, size, continued growth and ability to play the 1 – 4 positions. After his arrest, VUHoops readers scaled back their thinking, voting that he would see an average of 17 MPG, with almost one-third of the readers believing he would not see the floor at all next season. Wisdom of Crowds Experiment: Reggie Redding
Given the possible implications of the unsettling news reported yesterday by VUHoops, we thought we would change our planned Wisdom of Crowds lineup and shift our focus to Reggie Redding. Until yesterday, many VUHoops readers had commented that Reggie might get more minutes next season than any other player given his stellar defense, size, continued growth and ability to play the 1 – 4 positions.
His arrest yesterday on marijuana charges introduces the possibility, hopefully remote, that he may not see a minute of play next season. If there was ever a need for the Wisdom of Crowds, it is now. Use the voting buttons in the right margin of the VUHoops home page to predict the number of minutes per game that you think Reggie will play next season, and the comment section if you want to explain your thought process. To help you come up with your guess, we have provided below Reggie’s minutes per game and other stats from last year as well as his player assessment. Next week, we will finish off on the point guards by teeing up Maalik Wayns. Read more
