A late-April story in the Philadelphia Inquirer suggested that highly-ranked Texas twins, Andrew and Aaron Harrison, would be visiting Villanova at that time — it was not true. Their father, Aaron Harrison, Sr. told ZagsBlog.com that he would be visiting the Main Line campus with his sons during the first week in July. They will also visit Maryland during the same week. The duo, ranked at the top of their class at both guard positions, will try to make a decision on college this fall, before the high school season starts. Their father does not want them to drag their recruitment out through their senior season like Amile Jefferson did. “Their birthday is Oct. 28,” their father told SNY.tv. “They want to get it done before the high school season starts.” They have narrowed their list to just four schools, Villanova, Maryland, Kentucky and Baylor. Their father, Aaron Harrison, Sr. told ZagsBlog.com that he would be visiting the Main Line campus with his sons during the first week in July.

“They want to get it done before the high school season starts.”

They have narrowed their list to just four schools, Villanova, Maryland, Kentucky and Baylor. They be visiting schools this summer, but have only said they would visit Villanova and Maryland with a degree of certainty. Their father told ZagsBlog that they also intend to visit Baylor, but didn’t have a firm answer as to when, just that it “may be the end of June.”

The twins could also make another stop at Kentucky, but their father seemed to suggest that they had seen enough of the blue blood’s campus and facilities.

“As far as Kentucky goes, I don’t know about that. We’ve been there twice already and my wife’s been there. It’s something we’ve already done. My wife has talked to the coaches and given them the third degree. We may visit there again and we may not.

Their visit will come after they attend the USA Basketball under-18 camp in Colorado with Villanova freshman, Ryan Arcidiacono. The camp will run at the beginning of June and if they make the team, they will spend much of the rest of that month with the program, competing in a tournament in Sao Sebastiáo do Paraiso, Brazil.

Isaiah Lewis offered

According to ESPN NY’s Matt Ehalt, Christ the King junior shooting guard Isaiah Lewis picked up an offer from Villanova today. The 6-3, 160-pound guard also holds offers from UCLA, Kansas, Memphis, Georgia Tech, Louisville and Florida State.

He is a talented scorer from the wing who can get into the lane and score with a number of weapons. He needs to learn better how to move without the ball in his hands and still has to develop his three-point shot.

Villanova has been hot on the trail for North Carolina-based shooting guard Allerik Freeman, but they will need to start addressing those recruiting letters to a new address. According to the Charlotte Observer, he will transfer to Henderson, Nevada basketball powerhouse, Findlay Prep for his senior year of high school. The move was announced by Freeman himself when he tweeted, “Findlay Prep bound” on Wednesday afternoon. Freeman had previously narrowed his list to just Kansas and Villanova, who are still presumed to be his leaders, but he has also added offers from Duke, Ohio State and UCLA to his consideration. He is spending this summer playing for Boo Williams, who also coached Scottie Reynolds, on the AAU (and Nike EYBL) circuit. Findlay is a basketball-first program that operates out of a Las Vegas suburb, it has often been criticized since the “school” itself offers no real classes, but instead sends its athletes to the private Henderson International School for academic instruction. Despite the criticism of its structure, the program has been successful at placing players at Division I schools —all of their graduates have went on to play at Division I institutions (and qualified academically).

Villanova will be familiar with Findlay since they were also recruiting point guard Corey Joseph out of the school a few years ago.

Last season at his Olympic high school in Charlotte, Freeman averaged 17.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.3 steals. He moves to a program that has won three of the last four ESPN National High School Invitational tournaments. Findley Prep is 157-8 in the last five seasons and has never lost at home, while producing six McDonald’s All Americans.

Dickerson sets visits; Nova not among them

According to ZagsBlog.com, 7-foot center Jordan Dickerson, out of IMG Academies in Florida has qualified academically to play Division I basketball and begun to set visits to various suitors:

Darrell Crawford, Dickerson’s uncle, told SNY.tv Wednesday that his nephew is planning visits to Providence, South Carolina, Auburn and possibly St. John’s.

Florida State and South Florida are among the schools also in the mix.

It appears that either Villanova has lost interest in the super-tall big man as a potential member of the 2012 class or he has eliminated the Wildcats from his list. Either way, this development would appear to close the 2012 recruiting class and leave 3 open scholarships in the very deep 2013 recruiting class to be filled.

Villanova offered Stanford Robinson in December 2011 and the Wildcats have made an impression. The talented 2013 shooting guard out of Paul VI high school in Fairfax, Virginia has recently been on a tour of colleges that he has been considering — including a stop at Villanova not long ago. After a Monday stop in Bloomington, Indiana to visit the Hoosiers, Robinson told InsideTheHall.com that he plans to sit down with his family and coaches this week and hopefully make a decision by Friday. The decision is coming relatively early for the 46th-ranked player in his class. “Indiana’s definitely high in my decision, but so is Villanova and some other schools,” Robinson said to the Indiana blog. Robinson also has offers from Marquette, Miami, NC State, Seton Hall, USF, Virginia and Wake Forest, but it seems like Villanova and IU are among his favorites. He also had some great things to say about Indiana in his interview with InsideTheHall.com. He praised the Hoosiers’ coach Tom Crean and noted his existing relationship with new IU assistant coach Kenny Johnson, who had recruited him to play at Paul VI in his previous position.
According to 2013 Center BeeJay Anya’s (an AAU teammate) twitter account, Robinson reported that he had a very good time at IU, and it sounds like he was impressed.

Robinson is a left-handed shooter with good range and adequate size to play the 2-guard in college at 6-4 and 175 pounds. He acts as more of a combo guard at the high school and AAU level, but would need to improve his point guard skills more to be considered an option at the 1 in college. His length will be an asset defensively.

Update 10pm: Robinson has picked Indiana, per an announcement on Twitter.

He will also get a shot at the Harrison twins, Julius Randle (’13), Jarnell Stokes (’15), and Troy Williams (’13) when he attends the USA Basketball under-18 National Team camp from June 5-12 this summer. Jay Wright would love to bring some of those talented young players on board, and you can almost be assured that the Wildcats coach would love to have Arcidiacono talk up his program while he’s out in Colorado Springs.

It also wouldn’t hurt if Arcidiacono were on the lookout for some talented ‘Nova targets on the practice court. If he can make a talented wing like Williams want to play with him, it makes it a lot more difficult for that player to choose another school.

Maalik Wayns also did some recruiting for Villanova, and was reportedly influential in convincing Dominic Cheek to come to the Main Line. The two guards became very close and Wayns’ influence played a role in Cheek’s decision.

Can Arcidiacono become one of Wright’s best recruiters?

Troy Williams cut Villanova from his list. Then he cut Georgetown. Now, both schools could be coming back into the picture for the super-talented 2013 wing. He told the National Recruiting Spotlight website that he was going to add at least two schools to his list of Kentucky and North Carolina; and he’s considering bringing Georgetown and Villanova back into the race, with Florida and Louisville also under consideration. Williams was about to commit to one of UNC or Kentucky last week, but got cold feet at the last minute. “That morning, I talked to my uncle [Boo Williams] about it and we decided to hold off,” Williams told the site. “I didn’t really feel like it was too early but we both didn’t feel too comfortable with it.” Williams hasn’t made his mind up about which schools he is letting back into the picture, but the bad news for Villanova is that he said it will “probably be Georgetown and Florida.” The biggest factor going forward for Williams will be his relationship with the program’s head coach. Assistant coaches do a lot of the recruiting legwork, but it is often the head coach’s job to close the deal. If [...]

“I didn’t really feel like it was too early but we both didn’t feel too comfortable with it.”

Williams hasn’t made his mind up about which schools he is letting back into the picture, but the bad news for Villanova is that he said it will “probably be Georgetown and Florida.”

The biggest factor going forward for Williams will be his relationship with the program’s head coach. Assistant coaches do a lot of the recruiting legwork, but it is often the head coach’s job to close the deal. If Jay Wright wants to have a chance with the five-star blue-chip prospect, he will need to get in touch and stay in touch with him.

He has no set date to make a final decision on where he will go to college, but he won’t be choosing until after the AAU season is over.

He is considered raw on the offensive side, but can be a big contributor on the defensive side.

Despite his two-star rating on ESPN.com, Dickerson is the subject of very high expectations.

“He’s going to be a first-round draft pick when it’s all said and done,” one Division-I assistant coach told the NY Post a year ago. “If he goes to the right place, he could make himself a lot of money one day.”

Villanova likely would have to wait for Amile Jefferson’s decision before committing to giving the 7-footer a scholarship. He also has interest from Dayton, Cincinnati, West Virginia and Kansas State.

In addition to his skills win, Archy made 4-of-6 shots from beyond the arc in the senior game and told Philahoops.com that he was playing without pain now after recovering from his back surgery. He hadn’t played competitive basketball during the 2011-12 high school season.

Both Arcidiacono and Ochefu had moments where they shined in the contest, leading some observers to think that both could become forces at Villanova. Arcidiacono appears more ready to play a big role right away, while Ochefu could see time on the court, but will need to continue to develop to become a star.

In the underclassmen game Jermaine Lawrence continued his star-turn, scoring 27 points and being named the ‘Blue’ team MVP for the game. Lawrence has a long list of schools pursuing him, including both of Philadelphia’s Big Five entries. The 6-10 swingman has drawn comparisons to the former Texas Longhorn Kevin Durant, and it is tough not to see a bit of Durant in the high school star, with his lean frame and superior athleticism and shooting ability, Lawrence can take over games.

“I just wanted to play my ‘A’ game, not force anything and let my game come to me, keep improving,” he told the NY Post. “I really expected it to happen, especially how good I’ve been playing.”

Lawrence will cut his mile-long list down to five schools sometime in August and hopes to make a college decision by December. With elite prospects like Lawrence and Amile Jefferson, however, things can get complicated and decisions may take longer than expected.

Forward Karl Towns, Jr. also played in the Mary Kline Classic, and the St. Joes of Metuchen star has been on the radar for a ton of high-major programs including Villanova and Temple. At 15 years old, Towns is already 6-11 and he can play with anyone in high school and in addition to playing in the post, Towns likes to shoot from downtown, making it to the final of the 3-point contest last night. He ran out of time on the last rack and lost to Selden by a single ball.

He has become so highly sought after just one season in high school, that Kentucky coach John Calipari is already giving him the full-court press — to play for the Dominican Republic.

Calipari was hired to serve as the part-time head coach of the Dominican national basketball team, who often train in Kentucky and hope to qualify for the Olympics. Towns has been invited to work out with the team on a number of occasions as well as to work with their under-19 team in New York. Calipari reportedly wants Towns to do more than work out with his team — he wants to take the high schooler to the Olympics.

If you think that means that Calipari won’t be recruiting Towns, you would be mistaken. Kentucky has already offered him a scholarship. The Wildcats’ coach has been able to get extra facetime with the recruit under through his position with the Dominican National Team, and it is apparently kosher with the NCAA. That facetime seems to help his cause for college recruiting as well.

“As you know, Kentucky’s always the top,” Towns’ father told Zagsblog.com.

Jaren Sina was another Villanova target at the Mary Kline Classic, and the Gill St. Bernard sharpshooter decided to do things a little differently on Cinco de Mayo — he wanted to show that he could be a distributor as well as a scorer. Before the game he said he wanted 20 assists and he got 14 of them as well as 8 points to earn the ‘Red’ team MVP in the underclassmen game.

Sina was formerly committed to play for Alabama before his recruitment blew up and bigger programs started to check in. The 6-2 guard lists Pittsburgh, Alabama, Penn State, Northwestern, Villanova, Virginia Tech and a “long list of other Big East and ACC schools,” as schools that are recruiting him now and has not yet cut down to a smaller group.

What follows is a “Storify” board of the discussion that surrounded the event.
He recruitment remains wide-open at this point, but the five-star prospect has received heavy interest from Maryland and Temple so far, and both Under Armour schools figure to be high on his list. Villanova’s Jay Wright is also working hard to move Villanova up the talented recruit’s list, but interest from blue-blood schools like Kansas will cloud the picture early on.

He is a top-10 ranked point guard in the 2013 class who has great size at the position and excellent passing ability. With his size, he could potentially also play off the ball in college without giving up much defensively.

Goodman getting interest from Brown

According to Constitution head coach Rob Moore, new SMU head coach Larry Brown has called to express interest in former Villanova-commit, Savon Goodman. Brown is likely familiar with the talented small forward from his time spent with Jay Wright at Villanova games and practices since he was fired by the NBA’s Charlotte Bobcats.

Moore insists that Goodman will be academically eligible to play in college in 2012, but admits there is a chance remaining that he will opt instead to spend a year a prep school and reclassify to the 2013 class.

Goodman will visit Seton Hall tomorrow and will be setting up visits to Pittsburgh and UNLV as well. Zagsblog.com reports that West Virginia, UCLA, USC, St. John’s, Gonzaga and Temple with a goal of deciding in time to enroll for summer classes in June.

Amile may make decision soon, or not-soon

At some point, Amile Jefferson will have to make a decision on where to attend college. That decision might come soon, but Jefferson insists that he is still trying to decide.

“It’s still up in the air,” he told MainLineMediaNews.com. “I’ve learned a lot about the schools that I’m considering, have met with the coaches and players of each of the teams, and want to pick the school that fits me best. I definitely didn’t think it would take me this long [to decide], but it’s been a great process and I’m honored that these schools would stick with me so long. I’ll probably pick a date [to announce my decision] soon.”

There would be room for the talented forward to play at any of the schools remaining on his list, which include NC State, Duke, Kentucky, Villanova and Ohio State. Recent NBA defections or transfers have opened up playing time at most of the contenders.

The two ACC schools seem to lead the pack if you ask people with knowledge of the situation, with Kentucky close behind. Villanova remains “in the mix,” for Jefferson if he ultimately decides to stay at home for college, but that possibility does seem remote.
