Villanova opened 2009 Big East play with a loss in Milwaukee today against Marquette.

Down by 4 at the half, the Wildcats (12-2, 0-1) pulled ahead 47-46 half way through the second half  and kept the game within 3 with 5 minutes remaining.

‘Nova was led by Corey Fisher for the second consecutive game as he scored 21 off the bench. The Cats only hit 6 of 20 3-Point attempts (30%). Dante Cunningham added 16 points down low and Scottie Reynolds was good for an additional 15.

Stats-wise… asssists, rebounds, and turnovers were within 2 for each squad. However, Villanova was whistled for 10 more fouls which clearly frustrated Jay Wright. Read more

Game 14: @ Marquette

Marquette_old.jpgThe Big East season opens up on New Year’s Day as the #15 Wildcats (13-1) travel to Milwaukee to take on Marquette. The Golden Eagles (11-2) are unranked in the AP Poll and #25 in the USA Today/ESPN Poll. The game marks the first Big East matchup for Marquette’s new head coach, Buzz Williams.

Marquette, like ‘Nova, relies heavily on its guard play. Their inside threat Lazar Hayward has stepped up his play even at being listed at 6′6″.

The Golden Eagles usually start guards Wesley Matthews, Jerel McNeal, and Dominic James. Lazar Hayward and Dwight Burke fill the post positions. Matthews is averaging 19.2. Hayward and McNeal are scoring around 17 each. Marquette is one of 4 schools that features three 1,000-Point scorers.

Villanova leads the historical series 6-5, but is 1-2 since MU has entered the Big East in 2006. Read more

Filling in the Holes in the Schedule

We looked around and checked our opponents’ schedules to get some more details on our away games.

The games with Syracuse (Carrier Dome), Seton Hall (Prudential Center), USF (Sun Dome), Providence (Dunkin Donuts Center), West Virginia (WVU Coliseum), and Notre Dame (Joyce Center) are at the usual arenas.

The big note is that the UConn game will be at the XL Center in Hartford and not at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs.

Other venue notes…

  • Marquette- Bradley Center
  • DePaul- Allstate Arena

It’s Senior Night on a squad that has no seniors. Villanova has a slight 6-4 edge in the all-time series with Marquette. Since the Warriors Golden Eagles have joined the BIG EAST, the teams have split their two meetings. Those are the only two times that Jay Wright has faced Marquette.
