From The Bleacher Report: Villanova Basketball: Why Not ‘NOVA This Year?

Interesting comments. The author draws a mention to the 2006 squad and then…

So let me ask you this: Why can’t a new trio emerge for this upcoming season? I know, I know, it’s very early, but let’s do some dreaming. Why can’t a trio of Scottie Reynolds, Corey Fisher, and Reggie Redding lead the way?

From Villanova by the Numbers, a very analytical look at the performance of Stokes, Fisher, Pena, and Grant. Man, do we love VBTN.

#13 Louisville 68 : 54 Villanova

Louisville too much for the Cats. Nova held a 15-11 lead at the 12:30 mark of the 1st half but once Louisville took the lead midway through the 1st the Cats couldn’t claw their way back into the game. Louisville lead by 11 at the break.
Nova never came closer then 9 after scoring the first basket in the 2nd half.

Malcolm Grant scored a team high 11 and got the start because Scottie Reynolds and Corey Fisher were late to the morning shoot around.

: A Different Look at the Grant Situation

February 6, 2008 · Filed Under Jay Wright, Malcolm Grant · Comment

Yesterday we noted that We Don’t Know What’s Up With Malcolm Grant and gave a simplistic look at Malc’s stats in games won and lost by ‘Nova.

That article concluded with…

It just makes you beg for the behind-the-scenes peek to see if something
completely wrong is occurring.

Clearly, his statistics demonstrate an offensive prowess. But there has to be something else. The most likely guess is that Malc is not buying into Jay’s brand of “Villanova Basketball”. This is the odds-on favorite to be the reason for Grant’s recent “pine-riding”. Jay has made it a point to discipline players in the past and that is the only rational argument about what is occurring here.

So cheer up ‘Nova Nation. Keep your faith in Jay. We need to remember that specific coaching is being done for what’s best in the long run of VU Hoops.

Jay is the keeper of the program; and that program has roots deeper than the past 5 games and branches that will extend past this season.

Less than a minute played last night? For the “heart and soul” of the Villanova team? The ‘Nova Hoops world is so confused why Malcolm Grant isn’t getting more playing time. VUhoops.com isn’t commenting on Jay’s decisions, we’re just going to provide a 1-way look at some stats.

In Villanova’s 13 wins, Grant is averaging 17 minutes played and 8.7 points. Looking at Villanova’s 8 losses, Malcolm is averaging 9.6 minutes played and 4.6 points (if we throw out the Rutgers loss, his numbers are 8.4mins and 2ppg).

Surely a statistician can come up with something from those numbers. It just makes you beg for the behind-the-scenes peek to see if something completely wrong is occurring.
