Update 7/19: While I have your attention, it was announced today that senior linebacker Terrence Thomas was named to the preseason Buck Buchanan Award watch list. The Buchanan award goes to the best defensive player in FCS football. Thomas was a second-team All-American last season and is one of four CAA players named to the list.
Football: 3 Named to Walter Payton Watchlist
Three Villanova seniors were named to the Walter Payton trophy watch list. Ben Ijalana, Matt Szczur and Chris Whitney will all be considered for the honor, which recognizes the most outstanding offensive player in the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision.
Two Villanovans have won the award since 1987, when it was first given: Brian Finneran (1997) and Brian Westbrook (2001). Read more
Szczur Signs with Cubs. Returns for Senior Year.

(UPDATED 7/10) The good news is that Matt Szczur, the 5th round pick of the Chicago Cubs, agreed to terms on a contract with the North Siders. The even better news is that the Cubs have agreed to allow Szczur to return to Villanova this fall to finish his Football eligibility for the Wildcats.
Szczur will play baseball this summer in the Cubs farm system before returning to school in time to begin preseason football workouts. Regarding the arrangement, he said:

Matt Szczur Drafted by Cubs
(Updated 6/9) Villanova multi-sport überstar Matt Szczur was drafted today by the Chicago Cubs in the 5th round of the Major League Baseball draft. He was the 160th overall pick in the draft. He was drafted previously as a high school player in the 38th round by the Dodgers. This was the highest a Villanovan has been picked since Kevin Mulvey was picked 63rd overall in 2006.
This pick has implications beyond baseball, however, as signing with the Cubs would effectively end Szczur’s football career. While there is a longshot chance that the Cubs would allow him to return to school in the fall to finish his football eligibility as they did with Jeff Samardzija, a fifth round pick would have less leverage to negotiate such an arrangement. The award was established in 1961 and a team from Villanova has been honored four times, including the 1985 and 2006 Men’s basketball teams as well as the 2003 Women’s basketball team. Andy Talley’s team was selected because of their achievement winning their first national championship.
Villanova NFL Movement
[Updated 4/26 - 5pm] The NFL draft ended after the 7th round selections were made on Saturday night. No Villanova players were selected in this year’s draft. The last Wildcat player to be picked in the NFL draft was Tight End Matthew Sherry, who was selected by the Bengals in the 6th round in 2008.
Immediately after “Mr. Irrelevant” (the very last selection) is announced, NFL teams are free to call and offer contracts or try-outs to any undrafted player.
Since then, two graduating Villanova football players have agreed to sign undrafted free agent contracts with NFL franchises. Read more
Ross Ventrone
In honor of the NFL Draft, I thought I’d post some of Ross Ventrone’s Highlights from this past season for you. Ross isn’t expected to be drafted because of his height, but his pro-day measurables place him among the most athletic safeties in the NFL draft his year.
Hail Szczur!
