Blue & White Scrimmage Thoughts

As a non-student and young alum, I wasn’t able to get into Hoops Mania on Friday night (but don’t worry, I found something else to do). Although I couldn’t enjoy the spectacle on Friday, I did manage to scoot over to the Pavilion after the football game on Saturday for the far-more-practical event: The Blue and White Scrimmage. A List for Everyone

October 12, 2009 · Filed Under Corey Stokes, Random · 0 Comments

stokes-beer-girls2Jeff Goodman of Fox Sports, who endeared himself to VUHoops readers last week with his Big East Preview, today releases his much awaited Top 50 shooters in the country, with emphasis on the long-range bombers. Corey Stokes is #18 on his list with the commentary “He struggled shooting the ball as a freshman but shot 41.8 percent from deep last season and is one of the nation’s best.” Adding a quote from Jay Wright, “Corey has a shooter’s mentality — the next one’s going in. He also gets the ball to his shooting pocket fast and has a perfect release.”

We know that some of you guys have loudly protested our relentless coverage of the mind-numbing array of preseason top X basketball lists. For those guys, I have provided alternative links to Mens’ Journal’s list of the 25 Best American Beers (I did not recognize a single beer on the list) and Maxim’s list of the world’s 100 most beautiful women (Olivia Wilde of House MD came in #1).

Wisdom of Crowds Recap – Part I: The Guards

2009-nova-guards25

Five weeks ago, inspired by the best selling book, The Wisdom of Crowds, we set out to test author James Surowiecki’s central thesis that by averaging the individual predictions of a group of independently thinking people, groups can make more accurate predictions than experts working alone. We conducted our test by polling the VUHoops readers, asking them to predict the minutes per game (MPG) of each player on Nova’s roster for next season. The polls are now closed, but we’ll have to wait until the season ends to assess whether there is, indeed, wisdom in the VUHoops crowd. Until then, we have some interesting scenarios to ponder, including what combinations of players will be on the floor to account for all those MPGs we predicted for each player.

We had to make a few computations to translate the readers’ votes into player MPGs. For you diehard statisticians, our methodology will be fully described in Part III of our recap, which will be posted next weekend. To the other more trusting readers, we offer the assurance that we validated our methodology with greyCat, editor of the outstanding and quantitatively-oriented blog, Villanova by the Numbers. In this installment, we review the MPG results for the guards; forwards & centers will be posted later this week. Read more

Additional Jay Wright Quotes from Media Day

October 29, 2008 · Filed Under Corey Fisher, Corey Stokes, Dante Cunningham, Interview, Jay Wright, Scottie Reynolds · Comments Off

We gave you a bunch of Jay Wright quotes from last Wednesday’s Big East Media Day. Adam Zagoria has added some new ones…

On Scottie Reynolds:

Scottie is healthy and I think it’s one of the responsiblities of our coaching staff to keep him fresh and healthy this year. He kills himself in practice and Dante Cunningham does the same thing. It’s my job to do the same thing.

On the Coreys:

We’ll always recruit New Jersey because that’s where the bulk of our alumni are from. The history of Villanova basketball, there’s so many great players from New York and New Jersey.

Corey Stokes and Corey Fisher are the guys that really have a chance to make us a better team. They’re the guys that have made drastic improvements from last year and they’re both talented kids and very, very well coached coming from their high school programs. We’ve got experienced guys up front, those two could make the difference for us this year.

Pre-Season Player Evaluations

In case you’ve missed it, Nova News has been doing a Weekly Player Evaluation…

We’re guessing Dante is next!
