Fisher #9 PG; Reynolds #7 SG According to Sporting News

September 21, 2009 · Filed Under Corey Fisher · 0 Comments

Corey FisherUpdated 9/22,  12 Noon.  A basketball sports writer once wrote that when there is nothing to write about, make up a top-10 list. So in September, another day brings another list. Mike DeCourcy of Sporting News has published his lists of the ten best point guards  and ten best shooting guards in the 2009-10 season.  Corey Fisher makes the list as the  #9 point guard, with the following commentary “Fisher should increase his 24.3-minute average.” Profound, huh? At least he agrees with the collective wisdom of the VUHoops crowd, which predicted that Fisher-Price’s MPG would jump to 28.5 next season. Scottie Reynolds makes DeCourcy’s  list as 7th best shooting guard, with the commentary “[Reynolds] is on pace to challenge the 2,200-point mark, another subject discussed at length on this site (our conclusion was he will not break the record).

Here are the two lists in their entirety:

Wisdom of Crowds Recap – Part I: The Guards

2009-nova-guards25

Five weeks ago, inspired by the best selling book, The Wisdom of Crowds, we set out to test author James Surowiecki’s central thesis that by averaging the individual predictions of a group of independently thinking people, groups can make more accurate predictions than experts working alone. We conducted our test by polling the VUHoops readers, asking them to predict the minutes per game (MPG) of each player on Nova’s roster for next season. The polls are now closed, but we’ll have to wait until the season ends to assess whether there is, indeed, wisdom in the VUHoops crowd. Until then, we have some interesting scenarios to ponder, including what combinations of players will be on the floor to account for all those MPGs we predicted for each player.

We had to make a few computations to translate the readers’ votes into player MPGs. For you diehard statisticians, our methodology will be fully described in Part III of our recap, which will be posted next weekend. To the other more trusting readers, we offer the assurance that we validated our methodology with greyCat, editor of the outstanding and quantitatively-oriented blog, Villanova by the Numbers. In this installment, we review the MPG results for the guards; forwards & centers will be posted later this week. Read more

USA Takes Bronze Medal

July 12, 2009 · Filed Under Corey Fisher · 0 Comments

fisher-bronzeUSA Basketball.com reports that Team USA (6-1) rebounded from its semifinal loss at the 2009 USA Men’s World University Games and defeated Israel (6-2) 91-80 to collect the bronze medal . Host Serbia (6-1) won the gold with a 73-51 victory over Russia (6-2). Corey Fisher, who started the game, had 5 points on 2-9 shooting (1-6 from beyond the arc) in 23 minutes. He also had 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 2 steals and 3 turnovers. By the way, if you were wondering, the International 3-Point line is 3 inches closer than the college 3-point line.

Over the course of the two tournaments held over the past three weeks — The Serbia International Invitational Tournament and The Men’s World University Games, USA, Serbia and Russia played one another two times.

Serbia was the better team, followed by the USA and Russia, respectively. However, the USA was good enough to split with Serbia in their head-to-head matches (see Read More for USA, Serbia, and Russia’s records and the total point differentials in their head-to-head matches).

Corey Fisher made Nova fans proud, starting 8 of 10 games and averaging 10 PPG. Despite playing against some of the world’s best college players, his stats were very close to his season stats from last year (Minutes: 21 vs. 24; PPG 10.0 vs. 10.8; FG% 43% vs. 43%; 3PT% 24% vs. 35%; FT% 77% vs. 78%; RPG: 2.3 vs. 2.3; Assists: 1.5 vs. 2.8; TO 2.1 vs. 2.0; Steals 1.7 vs. 1.2).

How do you see his performance translating to the 2009-10 Nova season, and who do you think should start at point for Nova next year?
