Mike Sheridan’s Nova Notebook has a new entry on Chris Charles. It talks about his friendship with Dwayne Anderson and his post-Nova career, including playing with the Chicago Bulls in their summer camp.
George Raveling and the ‘I Have a Dream’ Speech
45 years ago today the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his famous “I Have A Dream” speech in Washington DC.
What few people realize is that Villanova All-American George Raveling ‘60, who was in DC to be a part of the March on Washington, was asked to provide security for Dr. King and was within arm’s reach of King when he delivered “the speech”.
Following the speech, Rav asked Dr. King if he could have the copy of the speech, and without hesitation, he received it.
That original typed copy resides in Rav’s safe deposit box today.

A few years ago, Raveling decided the notes — which could have fetched him millions — belonged in the Martin Luther King Museum in Atlanta, so he called to tell his story and donate the notes to the museum with a single caveat. He simply wanted the plaque to read, “Notes donated by George H. Raveling.” In a shocking turn, the museum representative was less than kind and rebuffed the offer…

Nova Notebok Article on Kyle Lowry
Mike Sheridan’s newest installment of ‘Nova Notebook features Kyle Lowry. The article notes how Kyle is spending a lot of time at the Davis Center this summer and his relationship with Alvin Williams.
Lowry also had the opportunity to visit Mali and Senegal with Adidas this summer.
Larry Hennessy ‘53 Passes
Villanova has lost one if its greats. Legend Larry Hennessy (Class of 1953) passed away earlier this week at the age of 79.
Hennessy scored 1,737 points in 3 years for the Wildcats and his #14 jersey hangs in the Pavilion. He also grabbed 438 rebounds in his career at ‘Nova. In 1952, he was named a First-Team sophomore All-American.
In 1953, he scored 45 points against Boston College, the third highest single-game output in Villanova history.
After Villanova, Hennessy played for the Philadelphia Warriors and was a part of their 1956 National Championship team.

Today’s article on Jack Fertig’s blog is another one on George Raveling ‘60. This post discusses Raveling’s insight in creating summer camps, the idea of enhancing Underclassmen Unofficial Visits. Another very insightful read Raveling.
Jack Fertig, is a New Jersey native, and was a graduate assistant at Vermont, Washington State University and Oregon. He then became a full-time assistant coach at Robert Morris, Western Carolina, and Tennessee before becoming associate head coach at Toledo and then USC.
He was then appointed the Director of Basketball Operations at Fresno State before finally returning full circle to the high school level where he served as head basketball coach and math teacher at Buchanan High School.
Here are all of his articles on George Raveling, who is one of Jack’s two greatest mentors.
Curtis Sumpter to Sign with LA Clippers
It was announced at Summer Jam today that Curtis Sumpter ‘07, will be signing with the LA Clippers. We’ll keep you posted when we come across an official release.
It seems the Clippers have had their eye on Sumpter for a while now. He practiced and worked out for them last summer.
Article on George Raveling ‘60 and Michael Jordan
We came across this a blog article, 13 Years and Going Strong, about Villanovan George Raveling ‘60, and his involvement with Michael Jordan’s camp in California: MJ Flight School.
Raveling and Jordan met in 1984 when Rav was an assistant coach on the Olympic Team. The two were drawn to each other based on their charisma and “likeability”.
