A Calendar Year-End Review for basketball is tough because it encompasses multiple seasons, but here are the highlights (and lowlights) for Villanova Basketball’s 2008 calendar year…

The Worst Call of 2008?

Villanova entered 2008 at #17 in the AP Poll and #16 in the USA Today/ESPN Poll with a 10-1 Record
January 23 through February 4th saw the Wildcats lose 5 straight games to Rutgers, Notre Dame, Pitt, Syracuse and St. Joe’s (PA)
Andrew Ott transfers to Penn State
February 11th… Corey Stokes gets whistled for a questionable foul call 90 feet away from the basket with .1 seconds in a tie game at Georgetown.
‘Nova wins 5 of last 7 in the Regular Season to secure the #8 seed in the Big East Tournament.
Wildcats beat Syracuse and lose to Georgetown at MSG during the Big East Tournament.
Scottie Reynolds scores 1,000 points in his first 2 years

VU finishes the Regular Season 20-12 (9-9 Conference)
Get tabbed with the #12 Seed in the NCAA Tournament
Defeat Clemson and Siena in the NCAA Tournament making it to the Sweet 16 in 3 of the last four years- a feat only matched by UNC, Memphis, West Virginia, and UCLA.
Scottie Reynolds scores 1,000th point as a Wildcat against Clemson
Lose to eventual National Champion Kansas
Finish the 2007-08 season with a 24-13 record and ranked #24 in the AP Poll
April 13- Taylor King transfers to Villanova
April 20- Malcolm Grant transfers to Miami
May 20- Maurice Sutton commits to Villanova
July 1- Isaiah Armwood commits
July 16- Rafal Bigus (’99) signs with Politechnika Poznan
July 31- James Bell (’10) commits

21 Point Come Back Win for the Cats over LSU! 68-67

The Cats showed composure for a young team and rallied in the 2nd half to overcome a 21 point deficit to beat LSU at the Wachovia Center in the last game of the inaugural Big East / SEC Invitational. Nova was down but not out in the 2nd half. They scratched their way back to beat the Tigers on the shooting of Freshman, Malcolm Grant. He finished with 18 points to lead Villanova. When Scottie Reynolds had a off night shooting he made a critical steal to help draw the team close. But it was Grant who scored all of his 18 points in the 2nd half lead the way. Hopefully this will help the young team grow up a little faster and prepare them for some really tough games ahead in the Big East.

:New Season. New Uniforms

The most keen uniform observer will notice some small changes in this year’s unis for the Wildcats.

Last year’s trim was a thin navy, baby, navy combo. This year, you’ll notice a double 1.5 inch stripe (one navy, one light).

2006-07

2007-08

This year’s collar yolk will also display half light blue and half navy. A trademark of Nike’s “fantastic” design.

The final note, is the sad logo creep of the swoosh and Big East logo on the shorts and the bizzarre “V” placement on the upper left shoulder (the bottom of the v-neck seemed more a propos). Oh well, we’re not the marketing geniuses here.
