Villanova 2011-12 Schedule Released

Posted by MIKE on September 8, 2011 · Under '11-12 · 36 Comments

The 2011-12 Villanova Basketball Schedule has been released, and we finally know the identity of the final non-conference opponent. Nova will face Boston University at the Wells Fargo Center in December, in a similar fashion to their December meeting with Delaware there last season that drew a paltry 12,000 fans. Despite the small crowds, the profit margin must have been high enough to warrant the larger arena’s use against another low-major opponent this season. Four conference games, one non-conference game, and one exhibition will be played at the Wells Fargo Center this season for six total games there.

The ‘Cats will also take on New York Institute of Technology, a Division II opponent, in what has become a traditional exhibition game at the Wells Fargo Center in early November. They will then face Monmouth, La Salle and Delaware at home before departing for Anaheim to play in the 76 Classic.

It is also notable that the Delaware basketball game, which was previously expected to be the night after the football game with Delaware on November 19th at PPL Park, will now be held the day before.

The schedule features a minimum of 18 national television appearances starting with the 76 Classic on November 24.

Anyone know when the Wells Fargo tickets go on sale?

  • http://twitter.com/ctcherry1 chris cherry

11/8 (Tuesday) NEW YORK TECH (WFC) Exhibition
This is almost as big a scam as the NFL preseason games in the season ticket packages.

  • http://twitter.com/Brian_Ewart Brian Ewart

It’s not like playing BU at an empty WFC is much better.

…then again, find another big time home opponent to play at the WFC instead this season. The conference didn’t help out much.

  • Robberbaron9

They let you sit behind the baskets…it’s kind of fun, I went down for the first half of last years game…

Sometimes I get the feeling that Jay schedules OOC opponents as if he is still coaching at Hofstra.  I realize he won’t always know the participants in the tournaments we sign up for, and Missouri and BC are no slouches, but we really need to take a second look at teams like Delaware, American, and Monmouth.  One of the three?  OK.  All three?  Come on, let’s start manning up outside the conference.

  • http://twitter.com/Brian_Ewart Brian Ewart

Hofstra can’t afford to play the OOC that Nova plays. Their RPI would be nonexistent.

Take a look at their schedule Brian.  Some serious heavy hitters in there to bump up that RPI.  Puhlease.

Anything less than 10-2 to start, we can probably kiss good-bye to an NCAA bid this year.   Got to win the Tournament and beat Missouri to get any street cred going into the WVU game.

  • Bartley Rat

night games WFC against notre dame & cuse…on a saturday…yes please

Rysheed Jordan on campus is interesting IMO, don’t really know much about him but he exploded late in the summer. Recruiting services I think all have him at 25 exactly or very close in 2013, apparently he’s a tall, long, very athletic PG prospect. Would be good to keep in Philly if Jay wants a guard, especially if the Harrison twins don’t work out which is probably pretty likely. Could be the type to continue moving up in the rankings too.

  • Tpain

I am surprised to see anything but outrage on this schedule. Great OOC games are a very strong recruiting tool, and important for national buzz, win or lose. I agree with a post above that we dont need cancel all cream-puff games, but lets have the chutzpah to add an MSU, Duke, Texas to the sched. I live through 3 yrs of Lappas and 1 year of Jay (who inherited Lappas’ sched that year). Though our teams were mostly awful, we had the guts to go play great teams. Best b-ball memory for me. March2002, 100 days to graduation, Nova beating a top 7 UCLA team in the Pavillion while I yelled Reggie [Bryant] the entire game. Respec…

  • Barney Rubble

Mostly Awful as in SIX 20 win seasons in 9 years of coaching?
And the first season of Lappas era was a mulligan with much of the crap that Rollie left.   The guy was a failure in the NCAA tournament but he won a ton of Big East games, he won the 1994 NIT in his 2nd season and he won the 1995 BE Tournament and finsihed runner-up in the BET another (1997) year.

Lappas was 174–110 (.613) overall and won 84 Big East regular season games over his last 8 seasons as Coach.    In his 2nd thru 6th season, he was 95-37  (50-22 BE)
I found Lappas’ game day coaching nauseating but then again so is the BURN type offense we had to watch lately.

Lappas pales in comparison to Jay’s NCAA success the last decade as well as Mr Wright’s GQ wardrobe and his well accepted media persona but let’s not demonize Lappas any more than he deserves.  We won games…a hell of a lot of games in his 9 seasons and he placed a number of players in the NBA.

Lest we forget that Jay just pissed two two starght talented rosters down the toilet late in the season and had we lost to Robert Morris in Scottor’s senior year, we would have surpassed the ODU disappointment of 1995.   The St Mary’s & GMU losses were hard enoigh.
The good vibes of 2009 are running thin for many Villanova fans.  This year is a rebuilder in many ways but the talent is on the roster again to WIN 20+ games and we return the entire team plus add two stud recruits the following year so Jay Wright needs to start answering the bell in March again.

Why does our student section suck? USU is on point, that’s awesome

  • novacat1985

I agree though i dont know if this will be a true “rebuilding’ year this team still has players frontcourt and back…my guess is we will be in the top 15 by January…..

  • novacat1985

We’ll be dancing THIS year …no question

    Barney,
    Right on! Excellent points!

I believe JW would be gone if we have a repeat of the last 2 seasons.
With an attractive 39yr old associate head coach, with head coaching experience and Doug West on
board,I believe Jay would step down if he 3peats.

I truly believe he has that much loyalty, and cares that much for VU and the program.

I only wish his coaching ability matched his EVERYTHING else.
    Recruiter,character,integrity,loyalty,likability factor,image,great dresser.

OH how I hope he pulls it together!!

JW would only leave for the good of the program.(IN his mind).
    Rare,you bet it’s rare!
    Too melodramatic,or what??

  • Barney Rubble

Maybe it’s time that a retired teacher from that Roberts Vaux high school gave some mentoring to the young ,man…LOL
Hubie White ’62  taught Social Studies at Vaux a few years ago.

Rysheed is an exciting player.  He is another BIG point guard and has great length.   Part of me was hoping for a more traditional speedy 6’0 type but if all these big guards (TJ, Arch. ?) cause Jay to abandon his offense with PG’s dribbling out the shot clock then I have no problem with piling up 6’3 or taller PG’s   Defensively that size is a great asset.  And Scottie, Fisher & Wayans all were less than spectacular on the defensive side.

Nate Britt is the prize as far as traditional PG’s in 2013.
Harrison twins are the grand prize overall for the whole class.  They are NBA bound players in a very short time.

But landing Jordan would be a tremendous success to keeping Villanova a step above others locally.
BTW, Vaux is a not a traditional Public High school.  The kids wear school uniforms and it is a designated “Promise school” out of North Philly.

        >>> Is characterized by longer school days, Saturday classes, a longer school year, and instructional programs which are researched-based and have a proven track record for getting higher student achievement.

Is an academic environment where expectations are high for students, staff, and parents and results are evident in the annual progress of each child. <<<

Villanova offered 2014 SF 6’6  Justise Winslow out of Houston, TX.   He is the son of former Houston Cougar Rickie Winslow.    Villanova missed on another Cougar’s son in LJ Rose for 2012.

Strengths:Winslow is a skilled lefty who can explode to the rim with the best of them. He has a tight handle (low crossover) and an electrifying 1st step as he gets to the rim off the dribble easily. He has the athleticism to finish through traffic and above the rim,

    Evaluation:
Justise Winslow is a big and athletic wing player with an impressive skill set and feel for the game. He has good vision and passes exceptionally well while usually being utilized as a “point forward”. He is also a good shooter with range to the three point line

Let’s make sure we DESTROY St Joe’s IN THEIR OWN BUILDING !!

  • Mddcny

Now it’s fair….we make them come to our building.

  • Barney Rubble

I heard the St Joe’s Student Body is working on a new cheer….

Is that Villanova on the court?
    YES!

Are they not superior to us in every way?
    YES!

Is it futile for our safety school to even attempt to compete with them on and off the floor?
    YES!

WINNERS!!  (pointing toward the Nova bench)

LOSERS!!  (pointing to the St Joe’s bench)

    WINNERS!!   >>>>>>

    LOSERS!!  <<<<<

Best Palestra sign I’ve seen in the last 3 years -  “St. Joseph’s Univ. – keeping ugly girls out of Villanova since 1851″  LOLOL !     The best news about SJU came this week when a Phila Inquirer atricle featuring West Chester Univ showed a list of applicant acceptance rates of colleges in the Phila area :

    Villanova 46%
    West Chester 49%
    PSU (Main) 52%
    Drexel 55%
    Delaware 57%
    Temple 61%
    LaSalle 66%
    Rowan 68%
    St.Joe’s 82% !!   (Seriously !)

That’s BEYOND safety school status  –  They should change their name to “Philadelphia Catholic Community College”  !!

  • novacat81

They have always WANTED to play at the Palestra – their choice.

  • Mddcny

you know there are many Nova-St Joe families….mine being one….and altho I enjoy beating the Hawks….the school does not suck.

  • novacat81

Hey Mddcny – I didn’t say the school sucked – it obviously serves an important role in the Philadelphia academic community.     But you must admit, the chip on the shoulders of many a Hawk and their perception of Villanova and its students stems from some form of inferiority complex which results in unwarranted verbal assults, and sometimes agressive physical action.  I’ve experienced it, I’ve seen happen, and it reflets poorly on the school and student body, in past times as well as today.

Quite frankly, Villanova could give two sh**s about what goes on at StJoe’s.    But St Joe’s watches Villanova and its every move, waiting to pounce on any misstep or unfortunate occurance.   Case in point – I happened to go to a St Joe’s basketball banquet about 6 or 7 years ago (filling in for a St Joe’s parent).  The video presentation that recapped the season highlighted game by game, individual and team accomplishments, win or loss.   The Villanova -StJoe’s game (a one-sided affair won by Villanova)  was TOTALLY OMITTED from the video.

Therefore, I’m not adverse take advantage of an opportunity to throw a barb at St Joe’s.

  • Spot ck

    If correct,truly unbelievable.
    Times must be changing.

  • Kish19043

Vaux is a joke.   The PSD just doctors  the grades.     PSD probably reports there is no violence there either.   Right.   They have even had shootings outside the schools.

  • http://twitter.com/Brian_Ewart Brian Ewart

46% isn’t great either. Admissions at Villanova might want to look into getting that number a bit lower.

Boston College is at 31%, Notre Dame is at 30% and Georgetown at 21%

  • Spot ck

    Barney,
I kid RECRUITING at the top of our home page, and assuming Ryan and Daniel sign in NOV.2011
and we don’t add another player(just saying) for 4 years, I think you can make the case, that we have
the core players for the Big Dance for the next 4 years.

    2014-2015(4yrs down the road)
    Back Court-Ty Johnson -Ryan A.
    Front Line- JVP-Daniel O-Kennedy.
    1st Subs-Hilliard(Wing&SG)-AY(Wing&SG).

The point being, we have the core players, and IF they DEVELOP along with the addition of any new
recruits,we are a solid tournament team, that could certainly make some noise, for the next several
    years.
It’s a testament to JW’s recruiting ability, while being a challenge to his coaching ability.

The next several years are going to be not only interesting, but critical for the future of the program
    and Jay’s future at VU.

IF Jay can grab the big ring, and return the program to the TOP TEN status, he can be as synonymous
with VU hoops,as coach K is with Duke.

No matter what my doubts,I’d love to see it!
    Too optimistic??

  • James Harvey

Even a repeat of last two years will not cost Jay his job, IMHO. That’s just not the way Villanova does things.

He’s brought a lot of visibility to the school. He’s run a clean program. He’s graduated his players. There’s a lot that goes into what a school like Villanova wants in a coach and winning is just one of them. And, lest we forget, by and large he’s won.

Would he quit? Why should he?

  • Spot ck

    James Harvey,
Please reread my post and the post I was responding too.

I believe that should answer your questions and give you a better understanding of what I’m saying.
If not,I respectfully suggest you missed the point.

Since I stand by my post and the post I was responding too,we have a gentleman’s stand off.

    Thanks for your post.

  • Mddcny

my daughter never felt inferior….did you graduate in 81?…then you must be early 50′s? time to get over it.

  • novacat81

Being a SJU “sympathizer” disqualifies you from being a true VILLANOVAN !

  • novacat81

No – graduated in 94,  So you need to wake up.   Go to Hawk Talk or whatever the heck its called to post your  lame ass drivel.

I’m number 477 on the waiting list of Pavillion Season Tickets…anyone have any concept of how long it will be before I get seat?
