The #7 Cats took it to #3 Syracuse and their 33,736 fans at the Carrier Dome, earning a hard-fought 83-72 victory.  The Cats rebounded from their tough last-second loss to Connecticut on Monday.  Syracuse has now lost two straight, falling at Pittsburgh on Monday.

How did the Cats beat the celebrated Syracuse zone?  It all started with 50% shooting from the field, 46% from beyond the arc, and 92% from the free-throw line.  Wayns, Fisher and Stokes combined for 53 points, of which 30 came from long range.  It continued with great defense during meaningful minutes for Maurice Sutton.  More to come, but feel free to comment and grade the team and players.

Closest to the Pin results are now posted.  Click here to see the winners and updated leader board.

Huge win – legit final four team – much more balance than last year – this team is not going to fold down the raod

  • Gary McLain’s Ski Lodge

    This team has some heart

  • Jake0022

a very high quality win here…no denying that…a signature win that count a lot towards our seed in the tourney….

  • TJ

Nice win! Great recovery from the uconn loss. Definitely a signature win! Keep it up!

  • floridanova

Wish we had the UCONN game back. We should be undefeated in BE Play

  • Hugh Jass

Great Win! Putting Sutton on Kris Joseph second half was huge. Mouph still needs to learn how to make a layup under duress; needs a softer touch off the glass. Once he figures this out we’ll be so much better. Wayns seems to have extra confidence and success against other philly guards he grew up with. Fisher was great. Stokes had a pretty good game. Good to see Cheek back in action. This team is playing some pretty good defense!

  • tmc826

I originally thought that Mouph had the most upside of the big men. If he fine tuned his game, he would turn into an elite big man by his junior year. Now, I am starting to think that Mo might be the guy. I would love to see Jay start Mo and have Mouph come off the bench. Mouph may play a little more relaxed which will help him develop the ofense he’s missing. It’s great to have depth and athleticism down low!

Great win. The rest of the regular season will be down hill until the final Pitt matchup for the regular season championship!

  • Jim

A great win. One of the best in a few years. We played under control. Wayns had a great game with no turnovers. I was on Fisher in the beginning of the year but he really is playing great. He showed me a lot today not taking a lot of shots after having a great game at UCONN.

I still think we win UConn with Cheek as he could have given everyone more of a rest. Boeheim coached horrible he should have changed things up and he was angry at Jardine. Amazing how Jardine never got his game going and he is one to get the crowd going.

It was a beautiful win. A team win. Jim

This team is so much better than last year’s – and much more fun to watch. The play D and they board (last year’s team did neither) and they play with great heart. They answered every Cuse run.
Cuse has more talent overall but Nova will be a much tougher out in the tournament.

  • Jimbo

Hopefully, Sutton will start getting the recognition he deserves. The guy’s got a helluva lot of heart.

  • BIGshoetoDROP

Great game by all. Yes it was interesting seeing Mo on perimeter against Joseph. Fastastic publicity for the university.

  • Pena Power

What a difference five days makes. No sky is falling posts now. I was very surpised that Nova welcomed the half court game. That’s the best half court offense I’ve ever seen from a Jay Wright team. I know they were painful to watch at the time, but those December games against Penn and LaSalle were key. Jay used those games to hone the team’s half court sets, even though he could have turned the guards loose and won both easily.

Also, that was pehaps Jay’s coaching masterpiece. From getting the team there Thursday and all the pregame prep to the in-game adjustments such as putting Sutton on Joseph–Jay deserves just as much praise as the players for this win.

  • Doctorfeelgoodes

rumor has it that larry brown helped design the off. attack against the zone today.

  • chuck st. petersburg

great win.great defense, great effort this is the nova team i’ve been waiting for!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Gunner

Anybody who doesn’t exhale for a few days, and go out on this Saturday night wearing colors with pride is missing the point. We just beat the #3 team on the road in front of the second largest on-campus crowd in NCAA history. It’s a great day to be Cat fan. Enjoy the journey.

  • Ed’77

I agree with Pena Power … that was a masterful game play designed by Jay with some great game adjustments (Sutton on Joseph). Nice bounce back game for the bigs. Lights out shooting for Wayns, Fish and Sutton. Good to see Cheek back and contributing.

  • Johnnyb1

Very impressed- as I mentioned in the live blog, prob one of the best win in years. With 4 guys in double figures and 92% from the stripe, the scary thing is, this team could get even better.

  • Brosser32

this is not just a win on the court this coild be a win for recruting as well

  • Juliano

My gut feeling was right, but us as fans are funny. You know if they lose again we’ll all be back to saying how bad they are lol. I guess we can’t help it.

  • RickyRight

I’m class of 2005, and when I was a junior I never could have imagined our program at this level. Now we have an all-time great coach who just hangs out to relieve his boredom by being a part of our program. Even if he doesn’t actually do anything, it has to make our players feel good that Larry Brown wants to be there.

  • Ed’77

Anyone notice that we had only 10 PF for the game? Last year, we had that in the first 10 minutes … 12 extra free throws and hitting at a 92% clip was a difference maker and one of the biggest improvements in the team year-over-year.

  • Pktigerpl

Yess, and i agree with the people that said it would have been a different game versus uconn if we had cheek. We can be deadly and the most annoying think is that even if we go undefeated for the rest of the season we still won’t have any confidence from anyone that works for ESPN. I’m starting to hate the espn squad.

  • TJ

If Mouph can develop a little bit of offense, he would be a beast, but right now he looks like a bull handling the ball, missing easy shots. His defense and rebounding was superb today!

  • TJ

The “ESPN clipboard discussion” JW did on defeating the zone looked masterful to me.

  • imisskylelowry

Who cares about ESPN! Hubert Davis is all we’ll get love from, just realize that and move on!

10 personal fouls is awesome. Not to mention our guards are now doing a great job making decisions when they drive through the lane… all last year and early this season we’d get charge calls against us. Doing a much better job now.

Also don’t look now but Corey Fisher is getting his NBA prospects up again. His defense, outside shot, leadership, and ability to run the offense are all rising quickly! He’s been himself and then some the last 5 games.

  • Jim

It is amazing that we only did commit ten fouls. In all ways this was one of the most complete games we have played in years. They played as a total team. I am amazed that Boeheim did not change things up and go man to man the way we were shooting. Hey imisskylelowry dont try baiting me with the NBA.(kidding). By the way I watched Kyle Lowry play last night he is beautiful to watch the way he can push the ball.

  • Naples34110

Especially since he was executing it before and after.

  • Ed’77

Andy Katz is the (blue) devil, but I really liked Doris Burke’s comments on today’s game. At least one ESPN TV analyst seems to like ‘Nova!

  • Naples34110

Hubie always loves Nova. He’s a fan of GuardU. He picked us today.

  • Big Daddy D

I am pulling for Sutton to get better and today was his best game ever. He made a real difference in shutting down Joseph after Joseph had a personal run going. And he shot his free throws during a very important point in the game. However, before we get too excited, Sutton also consistently was out of position on the defensive boards, allowing Jackson to get inside position for offensive rebounds and points. Sutton still has a lot to learn. But it was fun to see him and Mouph in there together and playing well together for a short time.

  • Chef

    More talent? Meh.

  • Naples34110

I think Jay is realizing that our legs need to be fresh for big games. Even if practices are too hard leading up to games, expect poor outside shooting in them. The announcers mentioned that he wanted us rested for this game, and it paid off.

I’m glad Wayns ignored the coaches and ‘scouts’ on this board. That’s why they have biddy basketball; so us tools can coach 8 yr olds and pretend we know something.

Was Bell injured, sick, or did Jay just choose not to play him?

  • Gary McLain’s Ski Lodge

Gotleib called IA “Armstead”…what a bunch of morons

  • Naples34110

Off topic, it was nice to see Uconn defend the Big East from being sweeped by Tenn this year.

  • Ed’77

    Better than Armstein!

  • Jim89

“sweeped”? Not a Nova English Major I take it. (Forgive me, I’m just having fun after a huge win!)

  • Specialkew73

I’m still busy eating my ****sandwich as I picked Nova to lose this one. But I am happy – busy eating that sandwhich. I did say that if Cheek played we had a chance…so maybe I won’t eat the crusts!

One of the best games I’ve seen a Nova TEAM play – especially given the environment at the areana and on national TV. As I have been saying Fish is superman. Turnover #’s were great for NOVA – except when TONE got rattled near the end and tried to outdo Armwoods dribbling performance.

MO SUTTON is really something. I have been a big fan of his heart and enthusiasm. He is coming up really big for us. Looks like adding some muscle too. Got a ways to go but he is on the right path – war-path. He rattles the opposition. Great clutch free throws! Great SLAMMMMM – and everyone knows he was also fouled – worst NO CALL of the year!

Armwood and Cheek both delievered solid – no harm – minutes off the bench…great D.

Wayns shows no signs of any lack of confidence..and that is great. TONE played great on both ends. Man everyone was on the same page against this ZONE…all realized there had to be an open man…all were looking and most times finding.

Mouph needs another 5000 shots from 6 inches…

    Entire squad played great D.

As a frequent critic of Jay’s coaching ….I will freely admit the staff did a final 4 quality coaching job on this one. How about that slow it down and take 15 seconds off the clock – almost everytime…without rush, without cracking etc – superb to watch. Had to kill the 33,700!

When this squad plays a s a team…with different looks – small and fast; bigger and mobile; big and guarding – they look final 4.

DON”t let up Cats….if you keep driving the tempo as in this one … you could… go…. all…. the… way! Thanks for a great afternoon!!

  • TC’87

I’ve said this many times before: ESPN is a biased network. It’s goal is to promote Uconn teams. It’s so blatant, it’s hard for me to believe others can’t see it. ESPN studios are only a short distance from Uconn campus. For ESPN, it’s all about Uconn.

  • Anonymous

Nova’s dominance of the orange continues!!! The dome is OUR house!

Welcome to the show Malik! Let’s face it…we shoot like that, we’re a final 4 team.

Nova’s best win since beating Pitt to go the 4.

Keep after it. Keep bringing Mouph along because those shots don’t fall in March and April as easily. I’m glad this team got to experience it though so they’ve got something to fall back on in the locker room the rest of the way. GO CATS!

  • Fact

such a huge win.. we’re so good at the dome for some reason. jay has been superb this season, totally making up for the egg he laid at last season.

  • Mr. Cheeks

Just gotta say this, love Dana O’neil, she always writes pretty good and fair articles on us…Just saying not all the espn folk suck.

  • Doctorfeelgoodes

not so fast. this is the big east & we must guard against a let down @ prov. 12 teams are at some level of good & on any nite you could lose if not focused. that will be our mission to improve. we are starting to learn to finish teams. that is psy. hugh. a confidence to carry you when your not shooting 90+% from the line & the 3′s are’nt falling is what we must develope. the d is always the key & looks progressivly better over time. gotta love that.go cats

  • Chef

That is the second really really good game I have seen this year. First time since those two 100 pt outbursts from the final four team. They can be better…they’ll lose some more games…but this team definitely has a high ceiling come March.

  • Schitzengigles ’10

Looking back over the last few Villanova teams under Jay Wright, I feel like this team brings together the best of the ’06 Ray/Foye/Lowry squad with the best of the ’09 Reynolds/Cunningham/Anderson squad. They flash the elite offensive execution, then lock down on defense and create turnovers. Superb guard play and solid action up front. And I can’t help but point out that this game followed almost exactly the script of the 2006 meeting with Syracuse in the Dome; sellout crowd, lights out shooting from 3, furious Syracuse rally, we put them down late for good.

  • Stevie V

Again we see the value of the two header point guard monster. Fish was the man against UCONN and now Wayns against Cuse.

Jardine and Waiters are still trying to figure out what happened….they were lost out there.

Guard U was at its best today

  • Stevie V

Gotta disagree with you on this one. Sutton starting over Mouph???
OK, Sutton had a good defensive game today but why start him over Mouph….so that Mouph can relax???? Relax from what ….nervousness???

  • spokesperson

Good question? Jay Bilas was amazed at the height James reached on a play, and made it a
talking point in the UCONN game,he was even kidding about the metal rods getting an assist
on the play!( IT was amazing).
I think the question if James is 100% recovered has been answered!

  • Kittlesfan95

Definately the most SOLID win and best all around play from the ‘Cats. I love how they slowed the game down and patiently worked for open shots. That gave the Orange very little opportunities for fast breaks. What a fantastic gameplan.

Sutton really looked good, and I’m starting to have a lot of confidence when he and Armwood check in because they are truly disruptive on defense and on the boards.

This game should be a big wake up call to the rest of the league. If it’s not going to be Fisher, it may be Stokes, or Wayns, or any other Nova player that could explode for a break out game. This team can destroy you in so many ways.

I went to the Dome 2 years ago the last time we won there. There are very little few venues with that kind of atmosphere, or that many people rooting against you. Earning a “W” in that place is definately extra sweet!

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5DRWOOB436JQT2WKM46C5UBQ2U honey badger

Monumental win. Best game/win of the season by far. Especially impressive after the tough loss at UCONN. But I wouldn’t go crazy yet. Just as the others said the sky wasn’t falling after the UCONN loss, I recommend Cats fans hold back on making travel plans to the Final Four…

  • coolbreeze

designed the offense? hit long range threes and all your free throws. lol. nice win. arwood is starting to come into his own. by sr yr he is going to be a beast.

  • spokesperson

Good point plus Dana,Fran F makes a point out of JAY and VU to the point of being bias,he
loves Jay and the program, and don’t forget DICKIE V,he picked us 4th preseason this Year and
your right,HUBIE always loves VU. I think were getting a little touchy, there is a lot of VU love out
there and the HELL with the rest of them.

  • super nova

    I am very happy.

  • Juliano

Yeah she does. If I’m not mistaken she was the beat writer for the Foye, Ray, Lowry teams for the Daily News.

  • tmc826

    StevieV
When you miss ten shots inside three feet over the last two games, something tells me he has to relax a little more, gain some confidence. Let’s be honest, he only plays five minutes in the first half anyway…two quick fouls, then he sits until second half.
I realize Mo needs a few buffets and a better offensive game to be a legit starter, but were not getting much on offense or defense from Mouph against the good teams. (He’ll get his 16 and 10 against Providence.)
Bottom line, Mo plays loose and Mouph has been playing real tight in big situations!

  • CJ

Im so happy for Bell tho
I dont think he was mentally ready for today, but hes a great kid

Last night on the Villanova 2010-2011 team show,
it talked about how much the surgery hurt Bell physically and he said he couldnt walk in the beginning of the season. The trainers then talked about how hard he worked to get back and now hes BACK

Gotta love JB, hes a Villanovan first class

  • CJ

    Championship bound!!!

I am confident in this bunch!!!!!

  • BarneyRubble

Outstanding win….Guards shot the lights out and won the loose balls when it counted.
The pace was perfect once Villanova got the lead. Ran the clock down and made the shots. When you shoot like that, offensive rebounding is not an issue.
Fisher is definitely BACK after his early season struggles.

    Guards A+
    Sutton A
The whole team gets gold stars for FREE THROW Shooting.

Our bigs still not finishing around the rim, but the CarrierDome backbards/rims gave us an extra 4 points today on some lucky bounces.
Mouph is still frustrating but the big win makes me want to forget it for today.

Got to give a big thumbs up to the referee crew who did a good job in front of over 30,000 screaming Orange fans. There is a few reasons it is so tough to win on the road in the Big East and one of them is the striped shirts often get intimidated in Storrs, Pittsburgh & South Bend.

On to PROVIDENCE…don’t let up and don’t expect to shoot 50% every game.

  • dom

Sutton played his best game. Wright finally gave Mo the minutes he needs to become a force. Loved seeing Sutton and Yarou playing side by side. Sutton is getting better with each game . Slowed down offense really was terrific. Wayans really good.

  • dom

Great comment Jimbo, I always felt Jay Wright never had any confidence in Mo. Should have used Mo in the late seconds of the Uconn game, but thats history.

  • Naples34110

    I deserved it.

  • dom

Good point tmc826. How does anyone know how good Sutton can be if he hardly plays. The guy is criticized for being thin, who cares, the guy is a real athlete.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_VRFPZG57ONMYBHRJJNWLL45XVI Matt

Ok Sutton put in some quality minutes today but lets be realistic. The dude gets manhandled under the basket and usually falls over as soon as someone touches him. He shows heart running the floor but always seems out of control and out of breath after playing for two minutes, then eventually picks up 3 fouls in a minutes time. Mouph’s offensive game will improve but his defensive presence and rebounding ability give him a huge leg up over Sutton. This is actually a comedic post

  • dom

Agree Sutton gets an A. Also Wayns played within himself, cool and calm.

  • Mattjmalek

What if we had Pinkston this season? WOW

  • Beardog

This was a great win–savor it. Let’s be realistic, though. Many of the threes that went in in the first half were not good shots. Mo and Mouph’s tip ins were dumb luck. Even Jim Burr was friendly toward us. It’s great to see how good this team can be when things turn our way. The true measure will be how we do when they don’t.

  • TJ

Funny you mention this b/c everytime (at least in the 1st half) when they returned from commercials, they would show about 3 Cuse highlights to 1 of ours. if I had turned on the TV at those points, I would’ve thought Cuse was up by 10, when in reality we were up, and were controlling the tempo of the game. Just my thoughts.

  • Specialkew73

Think you called that right. When this squad plays as a unit – as they did today….all members – the remind me of the best of those two teams. Really could be special if the chemistry keeps developing as well. Really a joy to see.

Hope it continues to build as it did with those earlier squads.

  • Specialkew73

Very good point about the refs, Barney…. Now that you mentioned it…normally I am ranting and raving about calls during the game and that wasn’t the case today. One excption was the foul on my man MO when he had that breakaway jam. Otherwise…VG officiating.

  • LuvMyKatz

Since when did Sutton become a better finisher than Mouph down low? Let’s not get carried away over one good game, although I give the kid lots of props for a great game.

  • Anonymous

on to providence is right…that’s no team to sleep on. They’re moving in the right direction and just took out Lville. Not to mention that we’ve been as unsuccessful there as we’ve been successful in Cuse. No time to read the press clippings. Listen to JW…NEXT!

  • Nervous Nelly

I agree it was a great game plan, but very much “by the book”. The key was getting the team to buy into it and stay with it through thick and thin, that’s the real contribution of the coaching staff; of course the execution was superb.

A great win, enjoy it tonight then get after Providence, knocking us off us could turn their season around. There are no easy Big East games!!!!

  • Hardcore fan

I haven’t even had the pleasure of watching the whole game but I religiously read the vuhoops posts. From what I am reading Sutton had a good game.

When an Irishman drinks his scotch he calls everyone out. So I am calling out you haters that ridiculed me when I posted that Armwood and Sutton have had highlight performances and should step it up with Dom down. They were recruited for big east play and here we are.

While I am at it I might as well call out Calipari and hell if i could spell it ever without leaving the website (Duke Coach) next year we will have four or five count em solid big men to go with our stable of unbelievable guards. You better get your title this year because we are not going away anytime soon. Not that we are going to make that a picnic this year either but a Higgins (God I hate that official) call or two might get you to beat us.

Villanova is a NATIONAL POWER. Jay I love you man. Sob Sob

  • Bill ’62

What a difference a game makes — after UConn, many of us were highly critical of Wayns, saying he should stop trying to shoot 3s. This was a really good win today — a great team effort with everyone making positive contributions. Next stop Providence where I was thinking we might be able to earn an easy win — but then the Friars go and knock off Louisville today. Just a reminder that the Big East is a monster conference, and our ‘Cats need to stay on their toes for 40 minutes of every game. Go — and keep going – -’Cats! We’re proud of you, and we appreciate the effort you exerted in the ‘Cuse Dome today.

    ED,
    Agree 99%.
Jay used the PENN and LASALLE(VERY LUCKY) to hone 1/2 court sets for games like this
and if he wanted too he could have turned the guards loose and won those games easily!YIKES!
Please don’t tell Jay that,he has enough on his mind!
Wayns looked a wee bit out of control in the 2nd half and we almost always remember the end
not the beginning or never the middle but I would have to give him my MVP.
Wayns came out and told JB,the players and 33,000 fans, sorry folks this is how it’s going to go
today and that’s the way it went!
A lot of TOUGH in such a little body!

Villanova averaged 26 FT attempts going into the UConn game. Then we only got 16 foul shots (made 12) in Storrs and lost by a basket.
On Saturday, we got 24 FT attempts and made an incredible 22 in a huge win.
The point remains that we win when we draw the fouls and get to the line.

The 3pt shooting was terrific vs their zone defense, but Villanova must continue to attack the rim as the season progresses. Use Fisher & Wayns quickness to our advantage in driving the lane and put the opposition in foul trouble late in the game. Most of the Big East teams lack the bench talent we have in Cheek, Bell, Armwood & Sutton if they lose one or more starters.

PITT & Villanova remain the 2 most complete teams in the League. Syracuse has issues that were exploited and we know UConn is led by one super player. Villanova remains a “pick your poison” team as we again had 4 players in double figures with Wayns hot in the first half and Fisher/Stokes taking over the 2nd half scoring.. Our bigs are still a work in progress but we generally only need one of them to have a plus game as long as the others aren’t actually hurting us.

With the Syracuse zone behind us for now, I would like to see them go back to pounding the ball inside to Mouph some more at Providence. The young man must be get to where we need him by March and he’s not going to get there alone. You can usually tell early whether Yarou is heading for a good game or not.
It’s also important to vanquish the ghosts from the two embarassing tournament games at Dunkin’ Donuts Center last year. Taylor King, Scottie Reynolds & Reggie Reading are all gone and this team can set a whole new tone as this season progresses.

It was only about 2 years ago that the rumors where JW to the sixers and LB to Nova. I like it better this way…BOTH JW and LB to Nova. Maybe he can convince some of the big guys that the main line is better in so many ways than central NY.

Nice stat on the U today…Nova seniors are 3-1 at the dome and Nova has the most ALL TIME wins at the dome for a visitor at 13. I think Pitts next at 10. We should be collecting rent at that place!!!

I would like to nominate giving the game ball to Maurice Sutton! I mean 8 pts, 5 rebounds numerous defensive plays. Wow if he can get better look out. I know the Coreys are great and what Malik’s shooting holy crap.

  • Specialkew73

That is well said..and that is why playing all 8 scholarship guys is vital for the Big East stretch of the schedule. Gotta share the time – when we can and get the becnh deeply involved. That has been happening …and we have outlasted several strong opponents. Coaching staff needs to keep that in mind….

    what is JVP doing now

  • DJ

Great performance against Syracuse. I still don’t think that Sutton should replace Mouph as a starter but I have more confidence in him now as a key player off the bench. This team has a nice balance. This year we have an inside game to go with the guard play, which should help our chances come tournment time.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5DRWOOB436JQT2WKM46C5UBQ2U honey badger

I have to agree. Sutton is making a lot of progress. Played really solid minutes yesterday. His development could make a huge difference for us later in the season.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5DRWOOB436JQT2WKM46C5UBQ2U honey badger

Right on Jim. I thought it was great how the refs really let the kids play. There was a lot of incidental, ticky tack stuff (both on the perimeter and in the paint) that probably would have been called in other games, but the refs resisted and let the game flow. I know I am being Captain Obvious, but that typically works to our advantage since we play such aggressive man to man D with our guards.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5DRWOOB436JQT2WKM46C5UBQ2U honey badger

That would be correct. Mike Kern covers her beat now. He also does a really great job.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_5DRWOOB436JQT2WKM46C5UBQ2U honey badger

Just to feed the conspiracy theory. Don’t forget that a good number of the guys that work at ESPN cable tv and radio graduated from the Cuse’s communications school. Just sayin’.

Katz called Mouph “Mustafa (sp?)” during an outside the locker room interview with Jay a couple of weeks ago. It was such weak sauce.

As I posted above, don’t get too carried away going the opposite way now. As someone who was really ticked off after the UCONN game, I absolutely agree this was a huge win and Jay and the team deserve a ton of credit for this huge accomplishment. But again, last year we lost a stinker to G’Town then beat WV on the road, and we all know that didn’t translate into a consistent winner. Long season ahead and we still have plenty to work on.

The elite 8 game against Pitt was way better than this. Sure its a big east win against a #3 team, but we are a long way from a final four.

  • mprams

Woo baby! Now let’s take care of business until Pitt comes to town. At Providence (never easy, beat Louisville last night), a home stretch against three tournament-caliber teams (G’Town, Marquette, WVU), and then at Rutgers. What a schedule! No wonder Jay doesn’t feel the need to stock up non-conference opponents in the November/December!

I was very critical. He stepped inside the arc and shot shorter jumpers which was nice to see. I still think the 3 should be his 4th option every time he touches the ball. 1) pass 2) drive 3) short jumper 4) three. That being said if any of these guys have the hot hand they should just keep shooting…that’s why you go to Nova as a guard.

I wish they could bottle up what they had yesterday and release it when needed for the rest of the season. Great effort in a game they really needed to win. I think they needed to win it more for themselves than for anybody else. This should give them the confidence that they can go into any environment, stare down the tough crowd and put up a first rate performance. I think championship caliber teams are born in games like this and hopefully that becomes the case with the Cats.

If Wayns can play in control like he did yesterday and they all take shots that the offense gives to them, they are really good. Now all they have to do is get the inside game sorted out. It seems to me that Jay is bringing this team along slowly as opposed to last year when they peaked so early. They even did a better job handling a tough press yesterday which was great to see.

No let down tomorrow. Crush the Friars. I am glad PC won yesterday. Get that out of their systems and go back to playing the way they have for the rest of the season. Don’t want to be the ones they ambush like they did to the Cards.

I agree with you. Lots of guys played really well yesterday but Sutton is the one guy that took his game to a new level. We needed every one of his baskets and rebounds. And, great defensive job on Joseph. Would have loved to see him on the floor for the last seconds of that UCONN game. You never know how it would have played out but I can easily see making it a lot tougher for Walker to drop that little floater on us if he had to put it over Sutton.

I still think the reffing in the UCONN game was awful. At least the first half was. My wife was listening to it in her car and she said that Whitey and Ryan were even complaining about how our guys were getting mugged. I know it is the Big East and it has a reputation as a physical conference but the stuff they were getting away was absurd. In fact, if you look at the two games we did lose this year, both were games where the opposing team was allowed to get away with murder against us.

I agree with you. He was great. My comment was more based upon the fact that we expect a lot more out of Wayns. Suttons performance vs expectations was much greater than Wayns. But no doubt Wayns was awesome. If he plays like that in every game, we become very difficult to deal with.

I definitely was critical of Wayns’ shooting too many 3 and will eat some crow. However, one of my major complaints was that he was just heaving them up, even when contested, with 30+ on the shot clock. He was much more in control this game and typically only shot when he had good open looks and the offense was set. He needs to keep working on playing within the confines of the offensive strategy and stop trying to force things. Won’t happen overnight.

I disagree that our shot selection was a problem, even if Jay implied the same point. Sure, not all of the shots along the perimeter were 100% green lighters, but most were uncontested high percentage shots, relatively speaking. They aren’t always bad shots if they don’t go in, but agree they aren’t always great shots if they swish. I think the guards did a nice job of discerning when to launch and when to hit the lane.

They aren’t always bad shots if they don’t go in, but agree they aren’t always great shots if they swish. I think the guards did a nice job of discerning when to launch and when to hit the lane.

I think the refs did a good job of keeping their whistles out of their mouths. As mentioned by others, that is tough to do in a BE game and even tougher not to call fouls on a visiting team that plays aggressive man to man. They “let them play” on both sides and it made for a great fair game.

I totally agree with this assessment. This is why we must continue to go to Mouph and develop his game in the post. Even though he may not be all that successful, we must keep working on his game because it will be critical to our hopes to win a National Championship. I will take a couple of losses during the regular season in order to give Mouph a chance to become a stronger player. If he didn’t have the ability, I would feel differently, but he does and he will get there. We just need him to get there this year if possible.

totally disagree, Nova is a class college, we don’t need this stuff.

  • NOVA05

I think the difference between B and A are too much. I think this team showed they are Elite 8 caliber, but not final 4, they played as well as they did versus Duke. And, it was the biggest win since Duke. But, there is still a lot of work to do. This team can be special if they keep getting better during the BIG EAST schedule.

The NCAA should open an investigation on Jimmy B right now. There is absolutely NO WAY that any player, who can qualify at Nova, and is recruited by Jay Wright, would ever…EVER voluntarily elect to play for this clown without there being some other incentive….Come on man…JB, you got beat by a better team clicking on all cylinders…No need to throw your team under the bus. OK, so your point guards sucked today. How about giving Nova some credit. Did your point guards suck the other 2 times this class ran you from the dome too?

Don’t know Nova…Recall we had a pretty big win right after the Duke game you refer to…You say we’re not final 4 caliber but the cool think about the final 4 is that you gotta put 4 teams in it…so who ya got? By last week’s rankings, that’s OSU, KU, Cuse, Pitt. We just took out Cuse. KU lost. Then you got Duke, SDSU, and Nova…I take your point. We need to keep improving and make sure we’re playing our best in March but it seems to me, we control our destiny and we’re right in the mix.

WOW. Pretty sure that is an outrageous comment.

Comparing class to not liking rap…not to mention a song by the Roots (bunch of “class” guys)…who are about as intimidating as a teddy bear as the house band for Jimmy Fallon. I consider myself pretty classy and I like the Roots. Go away crusty old white people. Awful.

I’m lost. Blah blah throw under the bus blah blah. He was disappointed with how his guards played during a big game at home, but he didn’t disrespect them in any way. And as far as giving Nova credit goes, he went out of his way to call us one of the top 5 or 6 best teams in the country. Dude, read the stories you link and get a grip.

i agree with you chef about the fact that liking rap doesn’t have to do with class, and the roots are great

Honey…I don’t really think JB should be investigated. He’s a HOF coach and I respect him…it’s called satire. Since they probably didn’t teach that at SUNY Cortland, I’ll explain it to you. The link includes JBs press conference where he says, among other things “our point guard play…the most disappointing…was not good today” and “I told our players they weren’t good enough to beat a (team like Nova)…” I was using irony to draw the distinction between JB throwing his guard under the bus and JW, who easily could have said the same things after the UCONN game but chose instead to give all credit to Walker. JW is much more player’s coach and since we’re on a Nova fan site, I thought I’d use irony to point out the fact that players should prefer to play for Jay. You should’ve stopped at your first sentance.

Sutton named player of the game by Rigsby and Fallon is kind of a joke.

He played 15 minutes of hustle defense, good team play and made a solid CONTRIBUTION….but player of the game???

He had a lucky offensive rebound.. put back hoop, a breakaway dunk and 4 very good free throws at the end. We all loved his effort but lets call it the way it is instead of trying to create this Cinderella story.

  • Stevie V

This time last year there were 25 posts about Reggie Redding minutes …our lock down defender.

Our rotations and defense is certainly a lot better than last year.

We seem to use the Zone trap on occasion instead of the featured part of our defense as we did last year….thus we are avoiding the fouls and chasing fast breaks. We seem more in control.

ChillCat, I strongly recommend you mirror your moniker and “chill” out. There is nothing in my post that suggests I missed any of your so-called “satire.” And was it satire or was it “irony?” There are differences, so clean up your own house before you attempt to question my intelligence and/or grasp of what you seem to view as complex concepts. Bottom line is I understand the gist of your rant and still think your post sucked. Since you can’t seem to process clear articulate points, let me try to write my argument again, but this time like I explain things to my 1st grader. Boeheim did not “throw his players under the bus” (BTW, the most trite/overused phrase going these days) because he expressed disappointment in his backcourt’s play. They played crappy and he clearly wanted them to know it — sometimes making your point in the press is very calculated and effective. Regardless, “JW” has made similar general points about positions and players. Be objective. Moreover, you have absolutely no idea whether “JB” is less of a “player’s coach” than “JW.” I strongly believe plenty of successful Syracuse alum, many of who played in the NBA longer than you have been alive, would strongly disagree. I could name many, but you wouldn’t even recognize their names. Finally, don’t try to insult someone’s academic background and imply they lack intelligence when you don’t even know them. (As an aside, not that I care, but you also come off like a complete elitest snob when you attempt to degrade a school like SUNY Cortland.) That is particularly foolish when it comes to me and what I’ve accomplished academically and professionally since graduating from Nova. Maybe I’ll give that some more thought when I’m once again guest lecturing there, upon request, in the Spring…

You’re kidding right? I post and OPINION where I take the position that I thought JB threw his players under the bus based on comments I heard him make. I contrast that with my OPINION that Jay takes a very different approach which in my OPINION makes him a coach that players might rather play for…Now if you don’t agree, hell, it’s a free country…but who the hell made you the post police deciding which posts suck and which do not??? I really never thought I’d have to defend my point that Jay is a great player’s coach on a Nova fan site but hey, you meet all kinds on the web.

A wise man once said that everybody’s entitled to their own opinion, just not their own set of facts. I guess I am just old fashioned because I enjoy reading things that required some, even if only a minor level of, rational thought based on reality. Too much to ask? Write what you want, but don’t freak out when people disagree and ask you to clarify your comments.

If that’s the way you’re going to respond to a post with which you disagree, then you should be prepared to get smacked back.
