Matt Szczur Press Conference

Villanova held a press conference today announcing what Brian had already shared with us; Matt Szczur will forgo an NFL career to play baseball with the Chicago Cubs’ organization. Enjoy!

The Erma, NJ native noted; “I am very happy to have made my decision. The Cubs are a great organization and I am happy to be with them. My situation couldn’t be any better right now. I got to play two sports in college at a great academic school. I expect to receive my degree soon and now I get the chance to become a major league baseball player.”

Congrats to Matt. As long as he’s happy with his decision, I am happy for him.

Villanova just sent out an survey to all students regarding the Big East football decision:

    http://2769823.turnkeysurveyor.com

It will not let you fill out the survey unless state you are a student… I hope the students are in favor of the big east upgrade!

  • http://twitter.com/Brian_Ewart Brian Ewart

I suggest not filling it out unless you are a student. If they get too many responses, they will have to disregard the whole thing.

  • http://boblongsports.com/ Bob

Is it me or does that survey not really say anything at all about whether students are in favor or not? All it asks is if students will go to the games. Students could say the same thing about FCS games too, I find that the survey was worded to ensure that the results turn out in favor of the upgrade, and is not complete in the sense that it doesn’t address any of the issues. If the same survey was issued, and the case studies were, say, Delaware coming to Villanova Stadium, I’d say “definitely go” (#7), and would spend upwards of $20 as well, just as I did to the WVU and Maryland examples at PPL Park. What a pointless survey.

Maybe I’m wrong, somebody tell me if I am missing something.

I think if there were just a yes/no option all students would say yes (as long as their tuition doesn’t rise). The real issue with students is support of the program- or lack there of for the current team. The board and athletics wants to gauge the support of students for an FBS program- with traveling, ticket prices, opponents, etc.

and by the way- if it were say delaware and rhode island- most students would fill out no if they had to pay.

  • Specialkew73

Absolutely world class young man! Thanks for all the fun Matt … we’ll be following your career. God bless!

  • BIGshoetoDROP

More or less another affirmation that the BoT will approve the move to FBS. Negative Nancy and her brother Bombastic Barney will spill their venum. It’s part of their 12 steps forward to the reality of the situation. Their at step 1: denial.

Back to Matt – Congratulations to a great student athlete and citizen!

FWIW: We already know whether students are interested in UDel at Villanova Stadium…

  • NovaFlyer

I will find Matt’s story at Nova and share with my Dayton students. When you look for models, this is the person. Thanks for keeping us up to date.

  • BarneyRubble

BIGshoeNmouth has nothing to talk about other than me since there is very little support by the BOT for the boondoggle upgrade and the financial assessment is a complete disaster for the proponents.
The fact is this formality was mentioned by Fr Peter over a month ago when he discussed “Market research to determine consumer demand/ticket sales at the FBS level”
    .
    >>> Timeframe:
January 2011: Continued community meetings, stakeholder dialogue, and research and analyses
February 2011: Board of Trustees meeting; discussion of research findings to-date
March 2011: Assessment of remaining research findings
April 2011: Board of Trustees meeting; discussion of outstanding items; Board decision

Whatever choice we make, it is crucial that we have performed our due diligence and that our community is able to move forward with confidence. I can assure you that we will leave no stone unturned in this evaluation. In the meantime, <<<

I thought I felt some hot air blustering yet again. Hrere’s where you’re at Bombastic Barney:

Step 1 – You admit you are powerless over the move to FBS—that your CYO dreams have become unmanageable.

Take the next step. We’re hear for you.

  • Cats66-64

Great news for a great representative of Villanova. Hope he continues to do and say all the right things. Good luck to Matt.

  • GPraz

    GOMaTT GO!!!!
    Great Villanovan!!!

  • GPraz

Barney you are the Sarah Palin of Villanova football. Is it possible any good in your mind could come from moving up like a 33 year season tickets holders and contributors like me seeing a big time game with OUR university playing in the game? you can’t wait for a basketball league of Xavier, Providence, Seton Hall, St John’s, Marquette. How about Villanova joining the CAA when the Bug east boots out all the non football schools and jay Wright leaves Nova. JMU and Nova in Basketball, Nova-Delaware basketball home and home every year GOD I’m yawning typing this OMG OMG OMG

  • BarneyRubble

Another 2-star recruit was added in TE/DE 6’4 245lb Morgan Craig of Abington Heights (northeastern PA). Craig played both ways and is an excellent high school wrestler also.
Morgan is expected to play TE in college so he may be the blocking TE to offset current freshman Brennan Erzbnik who is supposed to be a decent receiving TE.

    http://thetimes-tribune.com/sports/h-s-football-morgan-craig-has-enjoyed-a-dominant-career-1.1069220#axzz1BdbJkNX6
    >>> In his sophomore season, Craig showed his versatility by learning and being able to play tackle, guard and center along the offensive line.
But when coach Joe Repshis needed a push from the tight end position, he inserted Craig, who at 6-foot-4, 245 pounds is like adding an extra tackle. And he is quick and agile, while having soft hands to hurt a defense with crossing routes or flag patterns.
This season, Craig has caught 11 passes for 161 yards.

“He is very athletic for his size,” Repshis said. “You can attribute that to his wrestling background. He is a good run blocker, and can get clean releases and make catches in space. He’s worked very hard and has become a very talented football player. <<<

And I have nothing but PITY for your repetitive whining that is disconnected from reality. It used to be funny laughing at you for all those months but now it’s just sad to see your state of mind has passed into a deep psychosis. Didn’t Jared Lee Loughner support the Villanova upgrade on his MySpace page?

Meanwhile, the BOT remains unimpressed with the complete lack of any organized presentation by the proponents to date. It continues to be bombarded with nothing but fairy tales, pixie dust and romantic dreams backed up by empty promises, threats of doom, and unrelated illusions to draw attention away from the cold hard facts.

April can’t come fast enough to put a FINALITY to this boondoggle hoax that has been burdened upon the University long enough.

Congratulations to UCF for joining TCU as newest members of the BIG Conference USA Football League.

  • BIGshoetoDROP

    Wow…pure psychosis Bombastic one.

    Take the next step:

Step 2 – Come to believe that a Power (BoT) greater than you could restore us to FBS.

Bye…bye…CYO fairy tales, pixie dust and romantic dreams.

  • BarneyRubble

I am always partial to the football recruits who wrestled because they don’t shy from being rough in the trenches during games.
With the death of lunatic DuPont, it’s time that Villanova brings COLLEGE WRESTLING back to the mainline. LEHIGH just knocked off the #1 College Team in America tonight. That could be us in the future.
    —————————–

    Dear Fr Peter,
Both Gpraz and I will donate $5001 annually to help establish a multi-milion dollar endowment to self-sustain the cost of a College Wrestling program at this wonderful institution. We expect to sell out the Jake Nevin Fieldhouse regularly for regional matches against worthy opponents Pitt, WVU, Rutgers, Lehigh, Penn, Cornell, Army, Navy, Harvard, Princeton, Columbia, Brown. We can move bigger drawing schools like Iowa, Oklahoma State, Ohio State & Penn State to the Pavillion. As a self-sustained program outside of the Athletic Dept budget, Varsity Wrestling will not be subject to Title IX guidelines although we will establish 1 scholarship for an independent female student athlete to train with the Men’s program and prepare for National & Olympic Women’s freestyle events.
Please instruct the BOT to rubber stamp this proposal and we will begin to construct the wrestling workout room within the hot catacombs beneath the University.
If you choose to reject this proposal, you can keep GPraz;s money aand apply it to the wasted cost of the football surveys.

    Sincerely,
    FRIENDS OF VILLANOVA WRESTLING

Barney take the first step – please. You have to help yourself before we can help you. You have to leave your dream world. We’re rooting for you!

  • http://twitter.com/Brian_Ewart Brian Ewart

Love you Barney, but I am not hearing that the Trustees are planning to blow this off. To the contrary, the whole thing is being taken very seriously by everyone, including Father Peter. Financially the worst-case scenario’s being projected aren’t ultimately any more expensive to the university than the current set-up once you consider the additional revenue. That fact alone makes the whole thing more-likely than you think.

I’ve been in contact with someone close to the process in 1997, who is also well-conected with the Trustees.

  • BIGshoetoDROP

Reality as it is Barney….take the step.

  • RFS

If you going to make a joke using an individual who brazenly shot at a crowd of people, including two members of government and a nine year old girl (who was born on 9/11, nonetheless), then give it some thought and effort. Otherwise, the joke turns out to be not funny and you end up sounding like a bitter old d*@k. That is all.

  • BarneyRubble

    Lighten up, Francis.

Just because the BOT has the Upgrade decision in their crosshairs and will be shooting it down in April is no reason to get so upset that the steam blows a hole out of your own head. Pent-up aggression is the reason that BIGfootNmouth & Gpraz are so infatuated with me that they have to stalk and randomly take aim every few days spraying the crowd here at VUhoops with their hollow bullet points regarding the war over the upgrade decision.

  • Hugh Jass

Barney, don’t be a Lehigh Valley Hick. I remember you poked fun at the people of Appalachian State. Look in the mirror. You’re a regressive voice when it comes to football and you need to be held accountable.

  • GPraz

I just fianlly realized what I’m dealing with pertaining Barney Rubble.there will be no morepost by me in reagrds to anything he says. I can’t joke about murder in any fashion. At any rate I got my answer-finally!

  • GPraz
