Villanova NFL Movement
[Updated 4/26 - 5pm] The NFL draft ended after the 7th round selections were made on Saturday night. No Villanova players were selected in this year’s draft. The last Wildcat player to be picked in the NFL draft was Tight End Matthew Sherry, who was selected by the Bengals in the 6th round in 2008.
Immediately after “Mr. Irrelevant” (the very last selection) is announced, NFL teams are free to call and offer contracts or try-outs to any undrafted player.
Since then, two graduating Villanova football players have agreed to sign undrafted free agent contracts with NFL franchises. Read more
The Week In Review (Week of April 18)
For the second week running, the news featured another star recruit that got away. This time it was Cory Joseph breaking the hearts of Nova fans by committing to Texas. However, there was other important news this week , some of which could have a profound effect on Nova’s basketball program.
Last December while we were savoring our first FCS football championship, VUHoops posed the question, “should Nova jump to Big East football?” Of the 454 VUHoops readers who voted in our poll, 54% favored making the jump. As a follow-up on Brian’s post earlier this week, The New York Daily News reports that “the Big Ten is preparing to grow from 11 to 16 teams and could take three to five teams from the Big East. If it does, it could leave the Big East on life support. If Syracuse, Rutgers and Pitt bolt for the Big Ten, Big East football could be dead as early as the start of the 2012 season. It could leave Louisville, Cincinnati, Connecticut, West Virginia and South Florida scrambling to merge with the best teams from Conference USA to form their own hybrid league. In one fell swoop, the Big East could turn into a refugee camp for the remaining seven non-football power members: Villanova, St.John’s, Georgetown, Providence, Seton Hall, DePaul and Marquette.” Read more
Cory Joseph picks Texas
SNY’s Adam Zagoria reports that Cory Joseph will go to the University of Texas to play basketball this fall. On his decision, Joseph said, “There’s no 2nds, 3rds, 4ths or 5ths, it was a very hard decision. They all had great coaches.”
Joseph claimed that having two of his fellow Canadian AAU teammates on the Texas roster was not a factor in his decision. Read more
Dominic Cheek Highlights
Sean Donovan and Andrew Keefe put together this highlight video of Dominic Cheek’s freshman season. Hopefully with increased minutes the 2010-2011 version of this video will be much longer.
Ross Ventrone
In honor of the NFL Draft, I thought I’d post some of Ross Ventrone’s Highlights from this past season for you. Ross isn’t expected to be drafted because of his height, but his pro-day measurables place him among the most athletic safeties in the NFL draft his year.
Alumns in the News for Wrong Reasons
Two former Villanovans are in the news, but not for positive reasons.
John Pinone Jr., who played at ‘Nova from 1979-83 will be arraigned tomorrow on Federal Tax Charges.
In Florida, Barry Bekkedam has been named as a defendent in an investors’ civil lawsuit against Scott Rothstein who led a Ponzi Scheme. Bekkedam played at Villanova from 1986-90.
Big East Endgame?
We discussed the issue of Big Ten expansion and its affects on the Big East before. Lately the issue has weighed heavily in the consciousness of college sports fans. The latest scuttlebutt is that the Big Ten is looking to add multiple teams.
So what does this mean for Villanova? Can the Big East survive another raid? Will Villanova be able to land in another major conference, or is a midmajor conference where the ‘Cats are headed? Can a basketball-only conference be a major conference in today’s college sports landscape?
If Villanova football joined the Big East, could it save the conference? Would it give the Wildcats an avenue to gain admittance into another conference (perhaps the ACC)? Read more
