Corey Joseph Update
Update: Joseph will take his Official Visit to Villanova on October 23rd during Hoops Mania.
Rob Miech of the Las Vegas Sun reports that Villanova recruit, Cory Joseph, the ultra-skilled 6-3 point guard profiled by VUHoops.com in mid-September, will whittle his list of colleges to about a half dozen within a day or so. Jay Wright visited Joseph at Findlay Prep (Henderson, NV) in early September.

Michael Gilchrist to Take Unofficial at ‘Nova
Adam Zagoria is reporting that Michael Gilchrist of St. Patrick’s in Elizabeth, New Jersey will be making an unofficial visit to Villanova “within the next two weeks”.
His high school coach, Kevin Boyle, added that the unofficial could eve occur this weekend.
The 6′6″ Gilchrist is the unanimous #1 prospect in the Class of 2011.
Many recruiting analysts note that the Gilchrist will most likely make a decision between Villanova and Kentucky.
Jay Confirms Return to the Four Guard Set
While I was preoccupied for the past two days with Villanova’s Parents’ Weekend festivities, Adam Zagora snuck one past me addressing a topic we have discussed at length over the past month – the player combinations we likely will see this upcoming season. Zagoria interviewed Jay Wright on Friday, confirming what many have speculated – that Jay wants to exploit the team’s competitive advantage at guard, while hiding its inexperience in the forecourt, by playing “four out and one in.” Translation: the four guard set mentioned in Mike’s post, Different Looks in 2009-10. Zags quotes Jay saying, “When Reggie Redding comes back, that gives us an option of really having four experienced guards on the floor.” Read more
More to Life: Nova Football Remains Undefeated
Yesterday, I was able to witness the Wildcats on the gridiron as they took on Northeastern in the pinnacle event of this year’s Parents’ Weekend. It was nice to see the Villanova Stadium about 80% full. The fans all seemed to enjoy the game, except for a small contingent of Northeastern fans who congregated directly behind my seats.
The game was never in doubt as the Cats scored on its first three possessions to take a commanding 21-0 first-quarter lead and went on to win 56-7. They rushed for 410 yards, the third-highest total in school history. Junior running back Aaron Ball carried seven time for a game-high 109 yards and a touchdown. The Cats next face William & Mary, the first of four top-seven FCS opponents they will see in the next five weeks, culminating in a showdown with #1-ranked Richmond on November 7.

Jay at St. Benedict’s Coaching Clinic

Corey Stokes - a St. Ben's Alumn
In another one of those random topics… Jay Wright will be speaking at the Garden State Coaches Clinic on Friday. At the clinic, hosted by St. Benedict’s Prep, Coach Wright will discuss “Zone Offense”.
Pitt’s Jamie Dixon and Arizona’s Sean Miller will also be lecturing coaches.
St. Benedict’s is coached by Dan Hurley and is Corey Stokes and Frank Tchuisi’s alma mater.
Other players who have been through the St. Ben’s basketball program include Samardo Samuels (Louisville), Lance Thomas (Duke), Earl Smith (North Carolina), Tristan Thompson (Texas Verbal), and Greg Echenique (Rutgers).
Can Ten Deep Really Work?
Next season, Villanova fields the deepest team in its proud history, with five McDonald’s All Americans (Reynolds, Stokes, King, Cheek and Wayns) and two players many feel were deserving of that honor (Fisher and Yarou). In Mike’s September 18th post, Different Looks in 2009-10, he can hardly contain his enthusiasm as he explores the many lineup options available to Coach Wright with a team so deep. Notwithstanding the benefits of so many talented players, with depth comes the challenge of finding enough minutes to keep each player happy while establishing the rhythm and chemistry needed to go deep into March.
Perhaps there is a lesson to be learned from another Wildcat team, Rick Pitino’s 1995-96 NCAA Champion Kentucky Wildcats. That team was arguably the deepest in college basketball history, tying the unofficial record with nine players who eventually would play in the NBA. Five of the nine — Antoine Walker, Tony Delk, Walter McCarty, Derek Anderson and Ron Mercer – were first-round picks. With so many stars, how was Rick Pitino able to make that team gel?
