Wisdom of Crowds Experiment: Reggie Redding
Given the possible implications of the unsettling news reported yesterday by VUHoops, we thought we would change our planned Wisdom of Crowds lineup and shift our focus to Reggie Redding. Until yesterday, many VUHoops readers had commented that Reggie might get more minutes next season than any other player given his stellar defense, size, continued growth and ability to play the 1 – 4 positions.
His arrest yesterday on marijuana charges introduces the possibility, hopefully remote, that he may not see a minute of play next season. If there was ever a need for the Wisdom of Crowds, it is now. Use the voting buttons in the right margin of the VUHoops home page to predict the number of minutes per game that you think Reggie will play next season, and the comment section if you want to explain your thought process. To help you come up with your guess, we have provided below Reggie’s minutes per game and other stats from last year as well as his player assessment. Next week, we will finish off on the point guards by teeing up Maalik Wayns. Read more
Markus Kennedy Transfers Again
The Philadelphia Daily News reported today that the highly touted 6-9, 260-pound 2010 Villanova recruit, Markus Kennedy, has transferred to Winchendon Prep in Massachusetts, his fourth school in 4 years. Kennedy’s former high school, Living Faith Christian Academy in Cherry Hill, NJ closed last month. Villanova coach Jay Wright recommended Winchendon.
Villanova Involved with Top Level 2011 Recruits
We’re going to throw this back up top because it got missed in ReddingWeedGate …
The 2009 Recruiting Class of Maalik Wayns, Isaiah Armwood, Dominic Cheek, and Mouphtaou Yarou has set the bar high for Villanova Recruiting.
Jay Wright’s haul of incoming freshman has been tabbed #2 by most Recruiting Services including Scout, Rivals, and ESPN Recruiting. That’s tough to beat.
We’re not saying that the following 2011 recruits are locks for ‘Nova, but it is certain of two things; 1. Top Recruits are interested in Villanova. 2. Villanova’s recruiting footprint is expanding. Read more
Jay & the University Comment on Redding
Head Coach Jay Wright on Reggie Redding’s arrest…
“Reggie understands the seriousness of this matter and how it could impact the team. We will go forward as a basketball family and University to work together with Reggie to deal with this in the proper way.”
Statement from Villanova University…
A Villanova University student and member of the men’s basketball team, Reggie Redding, was arrested by Radnor Police early Tuesday morning for alleged possession of marijuana. The University has opened its own internal review of the facts to determine if Student Code of Conduct violations have occurred. The Athletic Department will also review this to decide if additional team penalties will be imposed. The University will move forward to determine outcomes as quickly as is possible and appropriate.

Tim Thomas Moves to Dallas

Thomas played for the Clippers, Knicks, and Bulls in 2009.
The Dallas Mavericks have signed former Villanovan Tim Thomas.
In his 12-year NBA career, Thomas is averaging 11.6 points and 4.6 rebounds a game.
He is the third Villanovan to switch NBA teams this summer. Randy Foye moved from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the Washington Bullets Wizards and Malik Allen is now with the Denver Nuggets after playing with the Milwaukee Bucks last season.
Update – 2010 Nova Recruit James Bell

James Bell
Sean Keeler of the Des Moines Register wrote a follow-up article on “The Dunk” over NBA star, LeBron James, by Jordan Crawford of Xavier University during the recent Nike-sponsored LJ Skills Academy. Mr. Keeler interviewed Harrison Barnes (6’8” 209 lbs), one of the witnesses to “the dunk” and the #1 ranked shooting guard in the Class of 2010. According to Barnes, “LeBron should have been a better sport and just let it [go]. Everyone gets dunked on. It’s not a big deal.” Apparently that applies even to young Mr. Barnes. When asked if he was ever dunked on, he replied, chuckling, “Only once that I can remember. It was James Bell, who’s going to Villanova.”… Read more
The Wisdom of Crowds Experiment: First Up – Scottie Reynolds
In the best selling book, The Wisdom of Crowds, James Surowiecki asserts that that a diverse group of independently-thinking individuals is likely to make certain types of predictions better than individuals with superior knowledge or expertise working in isolation. He offers many examples to support his thesis, including a story about a contest at a county fair where a crowd accurately guessed the weight of an ox within ounces when their individual guesses were averaged, soundly beating out estimates made by several cattle experts guessing independently. We thought we would experiment with VUHoops readers to see how closely we collectively can guess the average minutes per game that each player on Nova’s roster will play this season.
Until recently, Villanova has been known as Guard-U, so we thought we would begin with the point guard position. And when talking point guards, first up is, of course, Scottie Reynolds. Use the voting buttons in the right margin of the VUHoops home page to predict the number of minutes you think Scottie will play, and the comment section to tell us why. Please vote only once to maintain the integrity of the poll. To help you come up with your guess, we have provided on the next page Scottie’s minutes per game and other stats from last year as well as his player assessment. At the end of the week, we will average the reader predictions and see how close we came as the season progresses.
Another Villanovan Heads to BU
We mentioned earlier that former Villanova walk-on, Ross Condon, was heading to Boston University as an assistant coach for Pat Chambers.
Well, Chambers’’s move to Boston has opened up an opportunity for another member of the Villanova Basketball staff; 4-year manager Joe Bianco will be on the Terrier staff as an Administrative Assistant for Coach Chambers.
Joe was the recipient of the Christopher M. Dincuff Award in 2009 which is presented annually to a Villanova basketball manager, one of the program’s unsung heroes, who exudes an avid passion for the program.
