UNC Charlotte Game in the Works

September 2, 2008 · Filed Under '08-09, Charlotte

The Big East is notorious for being the last conference to release their schedules. Even though Villanova’s complete schedule won’t be released for another week or two, we’ve been able to piece together the schedule. It looks like the final piece of the puzzle may be a game against the University of North Carolina- Charlotte. The Charlotte Observer is noting that the 49ers could be heading to the Pavilion on December 19th.

Check out the “pieced together” 2008-09 Schedule.

ALSO, we are in the final week (or so) in the 1st VUhoops.com Contest. Head to this post and enter your Guess for the Date of the Georgetown game.

Why are we putting together such a weak non-conference schedule?  That’s great to see Texas on there but Charlotte, Navy?
We already have the Big 5 games that are generally much tougher than they look on paper which hurts us come tourney time.  Then you add the Philly Hoop group which will probably be the same story.  This schedule gives us everything to lose and so little to gain.  We are an experienced team this year and some early-season challenges could really help the mind-set as well as our tourney resume.

Paul:  I had the same reaction … seems like an RPI-killer that could come back to haunt us come tournament selection time.

Charlotte had an RPI of 69 last year (very close to Siena) and it looks like they only lost one player.

I still would like to see Jay schedule a few tougher games before conference play begins to build up his RPI.    VU is comitted to playing in the Big 5, which will hurt the RPI, so it seems imperitive to compensate with stronger RPI schools for other non-conference games.  Here’s the final 2008 RPI’s for the schools announced non-conference schedule (avg with Big 5 schools is 191; without Big 5 is 156):

Exactly.  We should start the season with 2 cupcakes and then start playing our peers (like Texas) not a whole slew of teams that will never recieve an at large bid.  Not only is it bad for our RPI and tourney resume, it’s bad for the team.  It’s bad for the psyche to play so many games where you are expected to crush the opponent.  While the top teams every year aren’t any better than they were 10 years ago the mid-majors are much better.  Even the best teams have off nights.  A loss or close game to a lesser opponent makes you wonder if you really are that good.
BTW Great web sight!  No more searching every dark corner of the web for Nova hoops news.  Keep up the good work.
