Curtis Sumpter Signed and at Clippers Camp

We brought the news to you almost two months ago that Curtis Sumpter (’07) was to sign with the LA Clippers. Finally, an official note from the NBA was released over the weekend. The details of Sumpter’s signing haven’t been released.

Sumpter will join fellow Villanovan, Tim Thomas, and 16 others for the LA Clippers’ Pre-season Camp.

New NCAA Basketball Rules for 2008-09

With the new basketball season approaching we’re going to take a minute to look at the new rules in effect for the 2008-09 Season.

2 or 3 will have possibly have a notable effect on the game [NCAA Rule Section] with our commentary in italics.

  • 3-point line moved back from 19′9″ to 20′9″ (this is for Men only)The desired effect of this is to extend the game and open up the interior. -Some believe it will create more room for everyone to operate, post players and perimeter guys.
  • Goal tending is called anytime after the ball hits the backboard (even “on the way up”) [Goaltending 4-34.3] -This eliminates the judgment call by the refs on whether a ball is on the way up or down after it hits the backboard

    Mike Sheridan is back at it again… the newest entry to ‘Nova Notebook, Reynolds Spent Summer Hours in Basketball Lab tells us about Scottie Reynolds’s summer.

    “I’m just a Villanova guard,” he states. “I think of myself as a player. A Villanova guard is hard to come by - it’s hard to do. That’s what so good about coming here and having Coach Wright teach you. It doesn’t matter what system you play in or what style you are playing. A Villanova guard can handle any style or atmosphere and do it as well as anybody that is labeled an off guard or a point guard.”

    Chris Charles joins Timberwolves for Preseason Training Camp

    Basketball Interview Challenge has posted an interview with former Villanova Head coach, Rollie Massimino, that was conducted earlier this week.

    Rollie discusses the 1985 Championship Game as well as coaching at Northwood University.

    Funny anecdote…

    His potential recruits, who were born around 1990, have no recollection as to what Massimino accomplished during his illustrious career as the Head Coach of the Villanova Wildcats.

    Updates to the Coaching Staff

    Jay Wright has made the following coaching staff changes with the departure of Brett Gunning…

    • Assistant coach Patrick Chambers has been elevated to the post of associate head coach
    • Jason Donnelly becomes an assistant coach from being Operations Manager
    • Administrative intern/video coordinator Keith Urgo moves up to manager of basketball operations
    • Kyle Neptune has been added to the staff in the video post. He is from Brooklyn and played at Lehigh from 2004-07.

    Tickets for the Jimmy V Classic on December 9th will go on sale tomorrow. Villanova will take on Texas in the second game of the doubleheader from Madison Square Garden. West Virginia plays Davidson in the first game.

    No News from the Cheek Visit

    No earth shattering news has been reported from Jay Wright’s In-Home visit with Dominic Cheek last night.

    Update: Adam Zagoria is reporting the same thing…

    The meeting took place at Coach Hurley’s home in Jersey City, just as all the others have. Villanova head coach Jay Wright brought assistants Pat Chambers and Doug West. Cheek, his uncle, Omari Knight, and his wife were also there.
